【京都 2泊3日旅行】雨の京都で人気カフェ&パン屋巡り|祇園白川から花見小路を散策|二条城、KYOTOGRAPHIE、絶品味噌おでん|#2

Day 2. It’s raining. Heading out to buy some bread. A 15-minute walk from the hotel. Arrived early around 7:30 to get a numbered ticket. I thought I was early, but I was 24th in line… Delicious-looking bread already lined up inside the store. I didn’t know this, but Kyoto has the highest bread consumption in Japan. Maybe that’s why there are so many bakeries and cafes—everyone loves bread. With some time to kill, we take a walk to the KYOTOGRAPHIE venue nearby. Such an impressive building… At 8 AM sharp, people are called in by their ticket numbers. 8:30 AM — we enter the shop. The bread is flying off the shelves, but they keep restocking—no worries. Picking up the bread I had my eye on. Once you pass it, it’s hard to get back, so I choose carefully. More and more bread keeps being added. “Freshly baked mentaiko peperoncino baguette.” It’s kind of big. Looks delicious… but hmm. Want to eat this one? This one looks good too. The canelé looks good too. So many choices—I ended up grabbing more than I planned. They divide them into what we eat now and what we take out. I plan to have matcha later, but I order matcha latte here. Breakfast on the second floor. The renovated machiya (townhouse) interior really captures the old Kyoto feel. The takeaway breads—this will be lunch later. They warm up the bread we’re eating here. Finally, breakfast! Starting with the sausage dog I was most curious about. As expected—meat juices bursting out. Hearty sausage with crunchy bread. So good. The cabbage coleslaw adds a refreshing touch. Next up: a bread called “Croque Verde”. Huh? What is this? It’s delicious. Avocado? Turns out it was spinach, not avocado. Very creamy. Thick-cut bacon and mozzarella gratin sandwich. This bread is good. Because of the rain, we chose a place where we could eat in. The stylish atmosphere made for a luxurious breakfast—so satisfying. Next time, I want to try their Tokyo branch. Next up, we’re heading to a different café we reserved. It’s just a short walk from Amamdacotan. Lots of fun shops in this area. This was once the residence of Nihonga painter Keinen Imao. About 100 years old, apparently. After ordering at the entrance, she guide us through the house. I see… quite educational. To the tea room. We ordered Hanawarabi and matcha. Too beautiful to eat—an artistic dessert. Even the glass plate is stunning. Enjoying it in a quiet tea room, watching the garden and listening to the rain. Kuromitsu syrup and kinako powder are optional. The warabi mochi is lightly sweet on its own. Just like it looks—soft and jiggly. I could eat so many. The homemade kuromitsu is pretty sweet. By the way, it’s really hard to pick up with chopsticks. They said it’s okay to go out into the garden, but with the rain, we’re just admiring it from here… Right behind Rokujuan is the KYOTOGRAPHIE information machiya. The rain keeps getting heavier… time for some indoor viewing. Starting with the exhibition in the tea room. Now heading to the second floor exhibition. Everyday life under occupation in Palestine. It’s hard to process… my heart aches a little. The rain has stopped. We’ve arrived at Nijo Castle. A bit soggy, but… Here’s the pamphlet. The ornate Karamon Gate with beautiful carvings. Entering the Ninomaru Palace. The carvings here are amazing too. No photography allowed inside. Standing on the stage where the return of political power to the emperor happened—feeling the late Edo era. When we came back from that time slip, the skies were clear…! Now we’re in the garden. The azaleas are in full bloom. Suddenly super sunny. The weather has cleared up so much. What’s that building on the right? Oh, did we just walk through there? Is that Ninomaru? So this is what it looks like from outside. That must be the study wing. It was dark inside the building, but the garden was so open and bright. The contrast between the dark interior and the bright garden was striking. These stones—yeah. I wonder where they brought them from. Oh, it’s a moat. Toward the Honmaru Palace. That’s the way to go. We don’t have a ticket for Honmaru, so we can’t enter. Looks like we needed to buy it online in advance. Lots of koi swimming around. Heading to Sanjo Keihan Station. From Sanjo Station, we walk toward Shirakawa. The name tag on the umbrella is in the way… I wonder if it’s open. No one’s here. This is a specialty incense shop. I’m instantly drawn to the rows of incense sticks. As I was looking, someone came out from inside the shop. This one smells the best. Hanamurasaki. I like the scent of sandalwood, so I chose this one. Back to strolling—now near Tatsumi Bridge. Visitors from overseas wearing kimono—so cute. Honestly, they seem to know tourist spots better than Japanese people do—impressive. The river, willows, stone-paved paths, and machiya houses—this is Kyoto at its finest. Didn’t spot any maiko, but found a tea house. Hanamikoji Street. A renovated machiya turned into an artistic space with Taiga Takahashi’s art and apparel. There’s a reservation-only tea room on the second floor. Back to the hotel for a break… A quick nap brought me back to life. I’m always exhausted on day two of trips… Next to ShinPuhKan is Ace Hotel. A hotel I really wanted to visit (ideally stay at, but…). Stumptown Coffee. Really wanted coffee, but holding back since it’s before dinner. Excuse us. Art pieces in the lobby. A quick peek into the shop. Very flashy. I lost my cap, so instead… Cute stickers There were also stationery items – lots of goods! It’s so cute. Feels sturdy the fabric, I mean. The lobby was being used as a KG+ venue. Go through the hallway and you’ll reach ShinPuhKan. Miso chocolate A café/bookstore selling the Amam Dacotan book. Kind of want it… Looking up at the Kengo Kuma building from the courtyard. Hope I can stay here someday… (praying) It got completely dark, so now heading out for dinner. To the left is Kyoto Imperial Palace. A place that serves miso oden and miso-based dishes. It’s listed in the Bib Gourmand – getting excited. Lucky to get a last-minute reservation. Starting off with a must-have – daikon oden. Licking white miso. Smooth and sweet – like a white miso sauce. The daikon is soaked in flavor and cuts easily with chopsticks. A potato salad called “Koropote”. Thought it was fried, but it’s soft. Squid and green onion with mustard miso. The head chef knows a lot about sake – very informative if you ask for recommendations. Since we’re here, went with a Kyoto sake. Soft-boiled egg oden. So soft the yolk was flowing out… Grilled yuba roll. Extra-large “waraji” thigh meat oden. Simmered until super tender – breaks apart easily with chopsticks. The chicken was so tender – my personal favorite. Apparently, it’s the most popular dish too. The miso-blended chicken broth was amazing. They even served a very rare sake called Kijoshu. Grilled miso-glazed namafu (wheat gluten). Got to fully enjoy Kyoto-style miso dishes – everything was so delicious. The staff were friendly and talkative – made it a great time. To be continued in Day 3.
