Gero Onsen Ogawaya Hello! This is Hozuki. This travelogue is about a trip to Gifu Prefecture (1 night, 2 days)! This time, I would like to stay at “Gero Onsen Ogawaya” in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture! Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, where Ogawaya is located, is about 4 hours by car from Osaka. It takes about 3 hours by train from Osaka to the inn, and there is a free shuttle from the nearest JR Gero Station! (No reservation required, shuttle bus: 7 minutes on foot) Gero Onsen Ogawaya is a long-established and relaxing inn! It has been ranked number one in the Tokai area for 5 consecutive years in the Jalan Awards! The rooms have been renovated with a modern look, and the views are amazing! It is located in the hot spring town, so it is convenient for eating and sightseeing! The hot springs are amazing! You can enjoy the waters of Gero Onsen in 5 large baths! And for dinner, we had a choice kaiseki meal where you can choose your dish ! The food was beautiful and delicious! Breakfast was buffet style, and each dish was delicious! We especially recommend the Gifu specialty chicken chanyaki and Hida beef curry! Prices start from just under 14,000 yen per person depending on the date and plan! (As of July 2025, there are cheaper plans available) This time, we would like to introduce the charms of Gero Onsen Ogawaya and Gifu Prefecture and Gero City. Thank you for your continued support! This time, we have a place we want to go, so we’re taking the Shin-Meishin Expressway! We’re heading towards Nagoya on the slightly cloudy Shin -Meishin Expressway! We’re heading to Mei-Nikan, which sounds like something we like. First, we’ll get off at the Ichinomiya East exit! Ichinomiya is the birthplace of breakfast! Enjoy breakfast! This is COCORO CAFE, a famous restaurant for Ichinomiya breakfasts! Breakfast served in a bread bowl that Snow Man ate! It’s also great that they serve breakfast until 4pm! And the daily breakfast is only 450 yen, which is a great deal! The interior of the restaurant is also nice and calm (there were a lot of locals there) Beef stew breakfast & daily breakfast First, the beef stew special breakfast! Wow! And my partner’s breakfast! It’s so filling. The beef stew is full of meat and vegetables! It’s delicious when eaten with torn bread! It’s rich! My partner’s daily special is a ham sandwich. The bread is so delicious! Of course, the coffee was also delicious, and it was a very satisfying brunch! Now, we’re off to Gero Onsen! From Ichinomiya, we’ll take the local roads on Route 41 (I’ll leave it to the navigation system) and head towards Gero, leisurely along the mountain roads that are typical of Gifu. Ah, it’s Gero Onsen Station! Then we go under the station… pass by Suimeikan, where we stayed before… and see Ogawaya from the bridge! (The big building on the left) First, we park the car in Ogawaya’s parking lot! We head to the inn while looking at the Hida River. It has a wonderful atmosphere. We’ve arrived at today’s inn, Ogawaya! A long-established inn founded in 1949! I’ve always wanted to come here! It’s in a great location almost in the middle of the hot spring town, and it’s convenient for sightseeing! Wow, there’s already a natural hot spring at the entrance! Be careful, it’s really hot! Lol Since it’s Gero, it’s a statue of a vomited frog. It was too early to check in, so we went for a walk! First, we went to the cosmetics shop Gero Cosmetics Yumekashido! There are signs that look very photogenic… lol The hot spring is gushing out! It feels good. We will also go to the GERO GERO Butter Stand, which is on the sign, later! Yumekashido has hand and face creams, amulet-like bath bombs, and “foot bath sticks” that look good as souvenirs! And across from Yumekashido is the birthplace of Japan’s three most famous hot springs! Gero Onsen Shirasagi no Yu! I went in the next day, and the hot springs were really nice! The price is also cheap (430 yen for adults), so I recommend it! Then, we walked a little further to Kaeru Shrine. We bowed and went inside… and there was a frog’s hand washing basin. So cute. We prayed for a safe return (frog)! On to our next destination (snacks). Standing bars are nice. We visited GERO GERO BUTTER STAND! We came here because we heard that the grilled rice balls here are really good! The perfect spot for a calf bathing in hot water behind the butter and soy sauce rice balls lol It’s a bit of a surreal picture, but let’s eat! This melted butter is irresistible. The super milky butter and soy sauce were so delicious! This is a shop we visited on the second day, but we would like to introduce it to you! Located in Gero Onsen town, En Du Plaisir! You can finally eat their specialty, the Kero Kero Special! These crepes are so popular that they are always sold out! They finally had them! The chocolate frogs are handmade! So cute! (540 yen) They only have 10 per day, so you’re lucky if you get one! Not only do they look good, they taste good too! Please try them! The fire hydrants on the roads of Gero Onsen are also cute. There are lots of frogs, so it’s fun just to walk around! I like Gero Onsen because it feels like the ultimate hot spring town! It’s almost time to check in! Let’s go back to the inn! Now, let’s head to check-in! Water is flowing as you enter the entrance! Amazing! This is a long-established establishment with a beautiful vase! (←I don’t really get it) There is a Noh stage in the lobby. This is amazing! Now, let’s head to check-in! SS and LL size yukatas are here. It’s nice that they have LL sizes! Ogawaya’s building is very large and there are 5 buildings! There is the “Annex Yuragi” which opened in 2016 with a private bath, the “Main Building” which has suite rooms and is easy to access, the “Keikeiso” which has rooms on the river side and mountain side, the “Hougetsuso” which is a little far from the facility but is reasonable, and the “Korukakaku ” which is a 50-year-old Japanese house! This time, I stayed in a room in the annex “Yuragi”! First, take the elevator in the main building to the 4th floor, then go to the Yuragi building through the connecting corridor! When you enter the Yuragi building, it feels modern! Take the elevator to the 8th floor and head to your room! The key is the old-fashioned type. Now, let’s enter. Annex YURAGI – Western-style twin room overlooking the Hida River Wow , a pretty modern room! The drinking space in this room is also wonderful. First of all, I want to see the view from the room! Amazing! This room has a terrace! And the view from the room is of the Hida River! Wonderful! After all, a river suits a hot spring inn. The room again! The bed is large and very clean. The soft light of the indirect lighting gives a calming impression. It’s also nice that there is an outlet by the bed! And of course, there is air conditioning! It’s also nice that there is a Panasonic humidifier and air purifier! There are cups and tea next to the entrance, and the water was cold in the refrigerator! Thank you. Next to the cups is a closet. The haori is also here. A normal-sized yukata and towels! The frog is cute. The sink is next to the entrance, which is a recent trend. This is quite easy to use. There was a wide selection of lotions and other items! Next, I’ll introduce the bathroom! This is not a bath, but a shower booth type. *I didn’t use it because there are five hot springs! The hair dryer was from Panasonic. Next, the toilet is also super clean! It’s a tankless washlet type and it’s spacious! Oh, by the way, they also provide snacks! I’m so happy. You can see the mountains and the river from the room… this is a really nice room! Yay. After taking a short break in the room, I’m off to buy some alcohol and sweets! Haha The interior of the building has been renovated very nicely and has a great atmosphere! First, let’s take a look at the main building! The lighting is lovely as you go down the stairs! Oh, the shop is also quite spacious! I found Sarubobo and Gassho-zukuri Chiikawa! Cute. There are many Gero Onsen T-shirts, which are quite punchy lol There is also a foot bath next to the shop! I’ll go in later! There is also a welcome drink corner! Nice! There was coffee, tea, black tea, and orange juice. Hooray for cold drinks. Hida River seen from the lobby. This is wonderful. After taking a short break, I went back to the hot spring town! There is also a Lawson about a 2-minute walk from Ogawaya, which is convenient! Hida beef snacks. This looks delicious. And an impressive selection of Hida alcohol! There is Hida beer and Gero beer, and there is a wide selection of sake! I wonder what sweets I should buy. It’s Yuami-ya. Their Honwaka pudding is famous! However, since it was a warm pudding, I wonder if it’s not suitable for drinking in the room. Next we went to Sarubobo House! As the name suggests, they sell Sarubobo, but they also have a large (1L) Hida Takayama beer (¥880)! Yay! We also bought Gero Onsen Manju (¥120 each)… a taste that brings back memories. On to Gero Pudding! When you think of Gero Onsen, you think of Gero Pudding! I’ve had it before, and it’s delicious. The seasonal strawberry flavor is the only one! Which one should I get? After returning to the inn and taking a short break, we’re going to enjoy the hot springs! The large public baths are in the main building and Keikenso! First, we went to Shirasagi no Yu and Yakushi no Yu in the main building. The exhibits in the passageway leading to the hot springs are also a must-see! As expected, it’s a long-established establishment with an incredible history, so this kind of thing is fun! Oh, we found a table tennis corner! Hot spring table tennis! Guided by the frogs of Ogawaya… we can enjoy old-fashioned hot spring table tennis! (Reservation required) Back to the large public baths! There are 4 types of baths here. At this time, the men had “Yakushi no Yu” and “Kajika no Yu”, while the women had “Shirasagi no Yu” and “Shirotae no Yu” (switched in the morning and evening). And here is Hyakusousui, which contains 100 kinds of ingredients! It has a very complex taste, but it is refreshingly delicious, and it is the perfect tea to have before or after a bath! Now, let’s enjoy the hot spring! “Yakushi no Yu” is a tatami bath that was renovated in 2018! It’s tatami, so it’s perfect for safety! In the morning, the refreshing sunlight shines on the large bath through the lattice, and at night it’s a wonderful bath surrounded by lights! And the open-air bath “Kajika no Yu” is a hot spring where you can hear the babbling of the river! As the name suggests, you can hear the cries of the river frogs. It’s an open-air hot spring that feels great! And the other “Shirasagi no Yu” is also a large tatami bath! The fusion of tatami and hot spring makes it a relaxing hot spring. This is a clear, colorless alkaline simple spring that is gentle on the skin and leaves it smooth! The open-air bath, “Shiratama-no-yu,” also has a “white ion bath” with pure white water! A large amount of negative ion bubbles penetrate deep into the pores and make the skin smooth! And the Annex Yuragi, where we are staying, has a whopping seven private baths! (4400 yen for 45 minutes) We will also introduce the bathhouse, “Sen,” at Keikanso. We went there the next morning! (Men can use it from the morning) In this hot spring spa, “Sen,” “nature” is expressed with stones! Stylish! Part of the bathhouse is an artificial carbonated spring, which is said to have a skin-beautifying effect by promoting blood circulation and skin metabolism! There is also a “lounge” where you can take a break, and you can enjoy a slightly modern Gero hot spring! After a short rest in your room, it’s time for the long-awaited dinner! Woosh woosh! Dinner was held in the banquet hall “Hana” on the 4th floor of Keikanso! Depending on the plan, it seems that private rooms and in-room dining are available! It’s nice that the venue has tables and chairs! The menu is set out! Yay. This time, the plan was to choose sashimi, a small hotpot, and a main dish! Here is dinner! Oh, it looks delicious! It’s Ogawaya’s popular triple choice kaiseki! Sake for a toast! Sake! Lol And seven appetizers. It looks beautiful! This is also one of the seven dishes. Bamboo shoots? And sesame tofu as an appetizer. Nice. The small hotpot is the mizore hotpot of choice! Sea bream and grated daikon radish! The main dish is grilled wagyu beef with miso on a hoba leaf! Wow. First of all, I’d like to eat like this! I’ll order a drink! Just as I was thinking that, a dish caught my eye. The name is a bit malicious lol (vomit drowning) My partner wants wine! Rose that goes well with both meat and fish. The staff lit the fire! Yay! The Wagyu Beef Hoba Miso is on fire too! It’s going to be delicious. Wow! The visuals are great! (Following the trend) Well then… Cheers ! Oh, so refreshing! Refreshing sake! The two gluttons ordered rice first because they wanted to eat side dishes lol And the sashimi came! Tuna, sea bream, and shrimp! By the way, you can choose the three choices like this! We chose Wagyu Beef Hoba Miso, Mizore Nabe, and three kinds of sashimi! Ah, the sake has arrived! Hida sake! No, that’s why it’s named… lol My partner poured it for me. The rice is amazing! Well then… Cheers! Wow. It’s doburoku . It’s strong and strong! There ‘s a lot of rice in it! I got some wine too, but it’s yummy ! Fully equipped like this! I’d like to eat! First of all, veggies first. Bamboo shoots! Delicious. Sesame tofu is also delicious! Chewy. The Thai shaved ice hotpot is bubbling nicely. Looks delicious. Miso soup came with the rice! Is this Shiraae? The vegetables are delicious. Is it an omelette with something (shrimp?) in it? Delicious. It’s kind of like sushi! This is also delicious! And sashimi. The Thai is fresh! It goes well with wasabi. And it goes well with sake. Delicious. Next is tuna! It looks fresh! This one is chewy and delicious! (I put too much wasabi on it…) This kind of Japanese dish is delicious and goes well with sake… There’s no way fried shrimp won’t be delicious! Yummy. It goes really well with white rice! It makes you want to eat more! Lol These are dumplings. It resets your mouth! These shrimp were delicious. They were very sweet and plump! Ah, the miso soup is soaking up the flavor… A new dish has arrived! Warm buns with Fukusa bean paste! The thick bean paste and the bun inside (glutinous rice?) are a perfect marriage! Yummy! The mizore hotpot is done! (For some reason, he is holding tofu) Sea bream and grated daikon radish! This is absolutely delicious! The fluffy sea bream and grated daikon radish are absolutely delicious! The tofu soaked in dashi is also super delicious! The wagyu beef grilled on a hoba leaf with miso is also done! The meat goes well with the concentrated miso flavor! Soft! It’s even more delicious when eaten with vegetables! I love it! And one more dish has arrived! Wrapped in… this is salt-koji grilled sawara! The tamagoyaki is also good! The tamagoyaki is stamped with Ogawaya’s logo. Not only does it look good, it tastes good too. Dried tomatoes maybe? Refreshing and delicious! The sawara is super plump! Is it the effect of the salt-koji? It’s delicious! Whew. There was quite a lot of volume! It was delicious! Just when I thought that was the end… dessert came out! Yay. This looks like panna cotta! It’s actually Western style! It was very creamy and the cream was rich and delicious! We finished off with hot tea. Very satisfied. We enjoyed dinner at Ogawaya! It was very delicious! Thank you for the meal! We walked along the river to work off our stomachs. It’s beautiful… it’s great that it’s so close to the city center! We can enjoy Gero Onsen at night! Nice view. Ogawaya’s restaurant. I want to go there too! I like the atmosphere of ryokans at night. Long-established ryokans are great! This is a great inn! The Noh dolls are a little scary at night lol. Now let’s go to the foot bath inside the building! The foot bath is very popular. It’s nice that they provide towels! Enjoy the foot bath. Warm! We started the after-party on the terrace of our room! Woosh woosh! The Hida Takayama beer we bought earlier and the retro Gero pudding! And the hot spring manju we bought on the way! We’ll eat them on the terrace like this! The night view is beautiful and it’s nice to hear the river babbling. The Hida Takayama beer is poured in… so… cheers . Oh, it’s quite bitter! It’s a hearty type of beer! Onsen manju. Fluffy and delicious with red bean paste! Hida beef flavored fried potatoes are added! Lol This is super delicious! I want them to sell this powder! Lol Whew. It was delicious! (I forgot to take a picture of the pudding) Drinking beer outside is delicious! As always, I think about my intestines at the end! I ate well and drank well today! Well, that’s all for today. Good night! Good morning! Today’s weather is… nice weather! The river and mountains are very beautiful! I enjoyed a morning bath in the replaced bath, returned to my room to rest a little, and then it’s time for the long-awaited breakfast! Woosh woosh! Breakfast is in the main building! I head to the main building. Breakfast is at the restaurant “Kisakitei Kanare”! By the way, it’s very popular! I waited for about 30 minutes! (Around 8:00) When it’s our turn, we’ll show you to your seat! (Reserved seat) Oh, what a nice seat with a view of the river! Yay. Then we grab our trays and plates and head out! First, the salad corner! Corn, penne salad, steamed chicken with snap peas, potato salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, mizuna, sprouts, onions and cabbage! There’s also corn flakes and granola! This is bread. There are croissants and more! Mini sliced bread and danishes. There are so many varieties! The side dish corner. There’s fried noodles, sausages, and kinpira burdock! Let’s eat. I think I’ll also have Chikuzenni! It’s Dutch-style eggplant! I love eggplant! I’ll have lots! Lol Next to it is eggplant and vermicelli with shrimp chili sauce. Next to the scrambled eggs is… Gifu’s specialty chicken! Yay. This is cod seaweed fry. Looks delicious. And there’s handmade tofu, and here are warm vegetables! Healthy. Chicken stewed in sweet and sour sauce! A hearty morning! The person next to me was having shumai! …He wasn’t there lol but there’s more! There was soybean gomoku stew, and here is mackerel curry nanban. It looks delicious. Seasoned shiitake mushrooms! I like shiitake mushrooms too. This is boiled komatsuna. Here is rolled omelet with salmon, my favorite! I have to have salmon! I’ll have rice! (Large portion) I also had miso soup! Plenty of ingredients. There was milk, apple and orange juice, and water. I think I’ll have some water. Information from my partner! They have Hooba miso, a Gifu specialty! I’ll put it on my rice! My partner looks like this. I wanted Hida beef curry but it was out of stock! Hozuki’s Choice – This is a healthy Japanese breakfast – First of all, we had Chikuzenni, Kinpira burdock, salad, cod seaweed fry, grilled salmon, chicken chan, and eggplant in Dutch stew. Shiitake mushrooms, mackerel curry nanban, and sweet and sour chicken. Then miso soup with too much green onion, and rice with hoba miso! It smells great! I think I’ll eat it like this! First, snap peas. Crunchy and delicious! The cherry tomatoes are fresh! Delicious with a pop. The burdock and lotus root in the Chikuzenni are crunchy! Full of flavor! The kinpira burdock is also crunchy! Hooray for dietary fiber! Ooh. The chicken is delicious. The miso, meat, and cabbage are the best! This flavor… makes the rice go down so well! And the hoba miso rice is also delicious! I love sweet and spicy miso! The shiitake mushrooms are well soaked in the broth and are delicious… mackerel curry nanban! The curry flavor never disappoints! I really love Dutch stewed eggplant. It’s deep-fried and soaked in it! Ah, the cod with the scent of the sea in seaweed fry… delicious… And the plump and soft salmon! This is also delicious! There is a lot of green onion, but it goes well with the miso soup! Finally, a strong sweet and sour chicken! A sweet and sour taste that gives you energy! So, I finished the first serving! I’m going to go for a second serving and finish off the meal! (A little modest) First, I ‘ll have the chicken breast Chinese jellyfish, and then I’ll have the spinach with sesame dressing. Dried daikon strips! Japanese side dishes are great for breakfast. I’ll also have the mackerel dried in mirin that I didn’t have before! I’ll also have the lotus root and chicken nanban salad! And I’ll have some rolled omelet, and the eggplant and vermicelli with shrimp chili sauce looks delicious! I think I’ll have a second serving of chicken! I ‘ll serve some rice… and have the Hida beef curry! This curry looks so delicious and creamy! I’ll have it with warm vegetables on top for a healthy meal! I’ll also have some Fukujinzuke pickles! I’ll have the delicious Dutch eggplant again! Oh, I found quiche! I think I’ll have some quiche too! I was curious about the marble bread! I’ll have some chocolate. By the way, they had plain, chocolate, and matcha! I’ll also have the Hida milk pudding, which is homemade by Ogawaya! I also had potato sticks and warabimochi (matcha and kinako)! Finally, I’ll have some coffee! Hozuki’s choice – it was a huge amount after I had eaten everything I wanted – first up was the Hida beef curry! It’s healthy with vegetables on top! Dried daikon strips, spinach, and chicken breast jellyfish also look delicious! Dashimaki , lotus root, and grilled mackerel are also standard breakfasts! And the eggplant, chicken, vermicelli and eggplant that I’ve been having for a while! Marble bread, quiche, and pudding make for a great dessert! I ‘m the type who wants to finish off with coffee. I’m going to eat it like this! Dried daikon strips make me want to eat something. Dietary fiber. I love spinach with sesame! It feels like I’m eating vegetables! I also like jellyfish, and I want to pair it with alcohol lol. The rolled omelet is so warm and delicious. Lotus root and chicken salad. The cold lotus root was delicious. The grilled salmon was good, but the grilled mackerel was also good! And the Hida beef curry! The roux was delicious! It was a delicious curry that went really well with the vegetables! Eggplant with shrimp chili sauce! It was spicy and delicious! The chicken was great, of course! I like how it was strongly seasoned ! Quiche! It was crispy and delicious! The marble bread was delicious! Maybe it would have been better if it was toasted? And Ogawaya’s special pudding! It was yummy! It had a nice sweetness. We finished off with coffee! It was delicious! And the view is also wonderful. Oh, Suimeikan. The breakfast was delicious and the view was also wonderful! We ate everything at Ogawaya again this time! It was a very delicious and fun trip! Thank you for the meal! Finally, we enjoyed the view from our room once again. It’s the season for beautiful greenery, but I’d like to come again in winter! Well, it’s about time to depart! Gero Onsen Ogawaya was a wonderful inn! The price was 13,865 yen per person for one night with two meals! (Taking into account coupons and points) This is a great deal for a long-established inn with excellent access, a nice bath, kaiseki cuisine, and a breakfast buffet! As expected of a long-established inn in Gero Onsen, it was a great inn! Finally, we went to Seki SA… we wanted to enjoy Hida a little more! So we got some chicken-flavored fried chicken (500 yen)! The two of us were already crazy about the taste of Hida! Gero Onsen Ogawaya is a long-established and relaxing inn! The rooms have been renovated to be modern, and the view is great! Located in the hot spring town, it is convenient for eating and sightseeing! The hot springs are amazing! You can enjoy the waters of Gero Onsen in five large baths! And for dinner, we had a choice of kaiseki dinner! The food was beautiful to look at and delicious! Breakfast was buffet style and each dish was delicious! I especially recommend the Gifu specialty chicken chanyaki and Hida beef curry! It’s a long-established inn, but it’s reasonably priced! The hot springs and food are great! This time, it was a wonderful inn! *Food, drinks, services, prices, etc. change depending on the season, so please check the official website for the latest information. Thank you for your comments and likes! (It’s very encouraging!) Where should I travel next? Thank you for watching!
