Please check the Overview page for more details. Awa Odori The Mitama Matsuri Festival is a summer tradition held every year from July 13th to 16th at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. Its origins date back to 1947 after the Second World War, and it is an event to console the spirits of those who died in the war and pray for peace. The highlight is the approximately 30,000 lanterns that are hung along the approach to the shrine and within the grounds, fantastically lighting up the summer night sky. Nighttime ceremonies at the main shrine are held every evening starting in the evening, as formal ceremonies to console the spirits of the war dead. The dedication events include the carrying of a portable shrine, Aomori Nebuta, Awa Odori, Edo Gei Kappo, Japanese drums, and Bon Odori. During the festival, you can visit the inner courtyard, the sacred area closest to the main hall that is normally off-limits (fees apply). Yasukuni Shrine was founded in 1869 Approximately 2.46 million people, including soldiers, military personnel, volunteer soldiers, and nurses, who died in Japan’s wars since the Meiji Restoration, are enshrined here. The “Nebuta” that was dedicated this time originated in Aomori Prefecture and is held in the center of Aomori City every year in early August.
