The setting for this video is Kyoto.
Every fall, I get the urge to go to Kyoto. I am sure that many of you are planning a trip to Kyoto in these days of deepening autumn. I would be happy if this video can be of some help.
Please relax and enjoy it. This time we visited the Shichiku area in Kita-ku, Kyoto City. It is a quiet residential area with many nice stores that is attracting a lot of attention. KONONEKI” is located in a residential area and is a renovated machiya (townhouse) that is about 80 years old. The high ceiling allows light to shine through the roof. The space is decorated with natural furniture. KONONEKI” is a store that mainly offers a bread menu.
Sandwiches and other items are also popular menu items. ☺️ Homemade bread for sandwiches.
It is soft, fluffy, and too delicious! The blended coffee has a strong bitter taste with a low acidity.
It was a perfect match for the bread. ☺️ The name of the store, “NEKI,” means “beside” in Kyoto. KONONEKI” has a warm meaning of ”beside here. A little background music and the soft sunlight entering the store.
It was the perfect place to enjoy some time alone. Next, we visited “Oboroyazuiundo . It is a popular Japanese confectionery shop with a lineup of warabimochi, dango, rice cakes, etc. ☺️ One of the most popular items is this fresh gongo-yaki!
Even before it opens, people are lining up for this dorayaki. ☺️ The Ogura was the last one available, so I bought it without hesitation 🤭. The dorayaki was about 7cm thick, really thick and full of cream.
If you are ever in the neighborhood, you should definitely buy one! Kibune Shrine, one of the most healing spots in Kyoto, is dedicated to the god of water. The “Kibune Maple Lantern Festival” is held every year during the autumn foliage season. It is a fantastic illumination event with beautiful red maple leaves. This year, however, the autumn foliage is later than usual, and the leaves were still green when we visited 😂. Orange lights illuminating Kibune at night. The atmosphere is wonderful… I would love to stay at Kibune during the autumn leaves season someday. It took 10 minutes to walk uphill from the main shrine. We went to the inner shrine of Kibune Shrine. I visited the shrine in a relaxed manner and enjoyed the fantastic Kibune to my heart’s content. It takes about 20 minutes by car from Kibune.
We went to “Kokeshi,” a restaurant not far from Kamigamo Shrine. The aroma of seafood and the sweet vegetable soup…too good to be true! The soup is so light and tasty that you can drink it up 🥹. The fried tofu is also juicy and good…! I finished it so quickly that I forgot I had an egg sandwich in the evening 😂. I was so full. It was a day to enjoy Kyoto at night. We will stay overnight in Kyoto on this day.
We booked a reasonably priced business hotel not far from Kyoto station. There were many welcome drinks in the hotel lounge! Glad ☺️ Amenities are available on the first floor of the hotel, and you can bring what you need to your room. The price was about 7,000 yen for an overnight stay on a weekday.
Hotels are quite expensive in Kyoto in the fall, so I think it was relatively reasonable. A simple room with one double bed.
More than enough for one person! Unit bath type bathroom. There is no large bathroom. A refrigerator and an electric kettle.
Everything I needed was there, so I could stay here without any inconvenience. We were shooting until late at night, so we were exhausted… I’m going to bed early because I’m going to start shooting again early in the morning on the second day.
Good night. Second day in Kyoto. I woke up early to take pictures of Yasaka-no-to (Pagoda of Yasaka), which was empty on this day… As expected of Kyoto in autumn, there were many people before dawn, so I couldn’t take pictures of the uninhabited scenery 😂. I posted the video I took that day on Instagram and TikTok, so please take a look if you like ☺️ After sleeping twice at the hotel for a while…
Around 10:00am, we started to act again! LOL! Next, we visited this temple, which represents Kyoto in autumn. The temple has long been famous for its autumn foliage, so much so that it is called “Eikando in autumn” (Eikando in autumn). The temple was founded in 853, more than 1100 years ago. I visited the temple in mid-November. There were still many green leaves, but the temple grounds were beautiful. About 3,000 maple trees are in bloom on the temple grounds, and when they are at their best, they turn red as if they were enveloping the garden. Although I could not see Eikando Hall in full red, I could enjoy the temple grounds in a relaxed atmosphere with only a few people. This wooden staircase along the slope of the mountain The name “Garyu-roro” (literally, “Garyu corridor”) comes from the fact that the covered corridor looks like a dragon. The view of the maple trees from the top of the stairs is also beautiful… We enjoyed the precincts of the temple while being healed by the sights and sounds. I could see a little bit of color..! LOL! There was also a small tea store just near the pond.
I love eating dumplings while looking at the autumn leaves. I visited a restaurant I have been going to for a long time for lunch
Gohan-ya Isshin. I love the modern Japanese atmosphere, and the rice cooked in a rice cooker is just delicious. You have to take off your shoes to enter the restaurant, so it’s nice to be able to relax. I usually order only the set meal of stewed pork,
But this day I was in the mood for fish, so I ordered the grilled mackerel! The mackerel is fatty and grilled to perfection!
The rice is so good! And this freshly cooked rice is really delicious. The rice is so glossy!
You can have another serving! Each of the small bowls of rice is also delicious, and set meal lovers will not be able to resist…
Thank you very much for the meal! After eating rice, we wanted something sweet, so we headed for a certain sweet shop. We passed through the Teramachi Kyogoku shopping street and visited this store. Sweet Tea House Umezono, established in 1927. The interior of the store is classically Kyoto-like.
The lighting is retro and the atmosphere is relaxing…! Umezono’s specialty, Mitarashi dango🥹. The dumplings are small in size, and the sweet mitarashi sauce is the best. They are not too sweet, so you can eat them with a crunch. ☺️ I appreciate that it is reasonably priced despite its downtown location: ☺️ Nice weather. We headed to the next store while enjoying the beautiful city. LE LABO, a fragrance brand from New York.
Opened in March this year, it is the first store with a cafe in Japan. The store is a 140-year-old townhouse that has been renovated and has a wonderful atmosphere…! The balance between the traditional machiya and the modern architecture is wonderful. I ordered a matcha latte, which was served in front of me. It was a special treat to enjoy a cup of tea while gazing at the beautiful tsuboniwa garden. Next, I visited “Coffee and Canulé,” a five-minute walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho Station. The interior of the store is clean and simple.
The store is decorated in warm colors and is very cute! Plenty of light pours in through the large windows. ☺️ The eat-in space on the second floor is also lovely!
It is equipped with a power supply and Wi-Fi, so it looks like it could be used as a work space. I ordered a hot latte and a chocolate-coconut canele. The canele was crispy and tasty, and the coconut had a nice texture! It was easy to come in by myself, and I was able to spend a relaxing time. Thank you very much for the food. Maruki Bakery is a long-established bakery that has been in business for over 70 years. I love their simple but addictive cobbler’s bread sandwiches. ☺️ It’s a traditional face-to-face sales operation, and when you order the bread you want, the clerk will take it from you with a smile. ☺️ I love this homey atmosphere, and it is my favorite place to stop by even if I have to stretch my legs. ☺️ On my way home, I stopped by this Japanese sweets shop in Nagaokakyo. Hanahira is a cafe in a renovated old house in a quiet residential area. A gorgeous parfait with hojicha ice cream, red bean paste, and white bean dumplings!
This was too good to be true… 🥹. Overall, the sweetness was not too sweet and refreshing.
The coffee was also delicious! The store is small and cozy, a perfect hideout for a solo visit. ☺️ I was also healed by the kind owner.
Thank you very much for your hospitality! The last temple I visited on this trip was Sohonzan Komyoji Temple. The gentle stone steps leading up from the main gate, “Onna-no-zaka” (slope for women). It is a beautiful tunnel of autumn leaves, which turns into a bright red tunnel in autumn😍. Fluctuating blue maple leaves.
After visiting the shrine slowly, we decide to return to Wakayama. I hope to see the tunnel of bright red leaves someday.
