From Hokkaido to Akita, Niigata, and Tsuruga. It’s a three-day ferry trip. Let’s set sail for the Sea of Japan in summer! Hello! We are on the JR Hidaka Main Line. The train is running through the grasslands of Hokkaido. You can see the ferry we will be boarding. We crossed the Atsuma River and arrived at Hama-Atsuma Station. It took 22 minutes from Tomakomai Station and cost $4. This is an unstaffed station with about 20 passengers a day. The station building is a converted train car. It is simple but cozy. This station is loved by locals and users. This notebook is filled with comments from travelers. It’s a 20-minute walk to the ferry terminal. Many people take the shuttle bus from Minami-Chitose Station to the ferry terminal. But if the weather is nice, I recommend walking from this station. You can enjoy scenery typical of Hokkaido along the way. Let’s take a look at the ferry route. The ferry first departs Tomakomai for Akita. And the next port of call is Niigata. On the morning of the third day, we arrive at Tsuruga. The sea at Hama-Atsuma is one of Hokkaido’s top surfing spots. I didn’t see anyone on the way to the ferry terminal. This is the Atsuma River that we saw from the train earlier. The birdsong can be heard continuously. You can see the ferry from the bridge. The wind carries the scent of the sea. This must be a road with very few pedestrians. This is the ship we will be boarding. “Lilac” Built in 2001, length 199.9 meters. Lilacs are the symbol of Sapporo City. Now let’s head to the ferry terminal. Cars and motorcycles are waiting to board. They are lined up in rows according to their destinations. Tomakomai has an East Port and a West Port. This is the East Port, the dedicated terminal for Shin Nihonkai Ferry. Taiheiyo Ferry and Sunflower are at West Port. There is a waiting area and a shop on the second floor. This shop has a surprisingly unique selection of items. For example, sauce made from clams from Tomakomai. Boarding starts at 6:30 p.m. Proceed to the boarding gate on the third floor. From the boarding bridge to the third floor of the ship. The passenger area is on the 3rd to 5th floors. The ship is about to depart, so let’s go to the external deck. You can access the external deck from the stern side of the 4th floor. There is a thermal power plant on the opposite side of the harbor. The south is the Pacific Ocean. Vehicles are boarding one after another. That’s a cattle truck. Over there are tractors and snowmobiles. The departure operations have begun. First, the vehicle ramp is being stored. There is a seagull on the rope. There are many seagulls here and there. They loosen the rope and reel it back onto the ship. The ship departed on schedule at 7:30 p.m. We will arrive at Tsuruga Port the day after tomorrow morning. The 34-hour voyage has begun. The chimneys are silhouetted against the setting sun. That plane took off from New Chitose Airport. The stern is still facing the direction of travel. The ship turns 180 degrees clockwise. The chimneys slowly move to the left. A train is running on the Hidaka Main Line. The turn is complete. A crescent moon floats above the chimney. The ship gradually accelerates within the harbor. The East Port is smaller than the West Port. The ship is heading out of the port. After passing the lighthouses on both sides, it is the Pacific Ocean. Tomakomai is receding into the distance. Let’s go back inside the ship. This is the 4th floor lobby. My cabin is a “Deluxe Twin” on the 5th floor. I made a reservation for $230. The cabin has two single beds. The interior feels a little old. Thick mattresses and indoor clothing. The air conditioner is operated with a remote control on the wall. The living space has a sofa and a desk. Amenities gathered around the desk. There is nothing in the small refrigerator. When you open the curtains, there is a terrace facing the sea. The cabin feels brighter with windows. Smartphone reception is also better. There are hangers and slippers in the closet. The bathroom has a bathtub. Shampoo, toothbrushes, and other amenities are provided. Then, let’s go eat dinner. The restaurant is on the fourth floor. The menu varies between morning, noon, and evening. My dinner is pork stew for $12. Sake from Hokkaido is $5. Let’s take a look at the shop on the 3rd floor. Many products are specialties of each port of call. Hokkaido, Akita, Niigata, Tsuruga… Each of the four regions has its own specialty products. There are also original products from the ferry company. The grand bath on the 4th floor is open until 10:00 p.m. Lockers are coin-return type. Windows face the starboard side of the ship.

I’m going to eat some Akita cheese pickles and go to bed. It is 5:00 a.m. The ship is sailing west of Aomori. You can see the Shirakami Mountains, a World Natural Heritage Site. Despite the early morning, there are many passengers on the external deck. This is the sister ship “Yukari.” The ships sounded their horns to each other. The Yukari will arrive at Tomakomai Port this evening. Passing by sister ships is one of the highlights of ferry travel. This region has the most wind power generation in Japan. This is because strong winds blow from the Sea of Japan throughout the year. The ship enters Akita Port. Many fishermen gather at the fishing park and breakwater. Akita Port is located at the mouth of the Akita Canal. Akita has prospered since ancient times as a port of call for merchant ships. The ship makes a 90-degree turn after traveling up the canal. The ship continues to turn until its stern faces the ferry terminal. After that, the ship slowly moves backward. This is the ferry terminal building. Crew members are waiting on the stern deck. It’s 7:35 a.m. Arrival on schedule. Many passengers are watching the docking operation. The port call time is one hour. Passengers are not permitted to disembark at any port other than their destination. Let’s have breakfast at the restaurant. The morning set meal is $8. Vehicles are boarding and disembarking, and cargo is being loaded and unloaded. There are many passengers and seagulls on the external deck. They seem quite used to people. Departure at 8:35 a.m. The rope is being removed from the bollard and rolled up. The wind is strong even in summer. I am happy that they saw the ship off. The long sound of the ship’s horn… That is the tallest building in Akita, with a height of 143 meters. More and more seagulls are gathering. How far will they board? They don’t flee even when we get close. The next port of call is Niigata. Let’s take a look around the ship until then. There are many game consoles on this ship. Massage chairs in the observation corridor. 10 minutes for $1 is quite cheap. There is also a café open separately from the restaurant. The huge sculpture in the 3rd floor lobby. Let’s take a look at the other cabins. “Tourist S” $165 Wheelchair-accessible cabins are available at the same rate. This cabin has only curtains and no lock. “Tourist A” $90 It’s a capsule-type bunk bed. “Tourist B” is also $90. “Tourist J” is only for passengers boarding or disembarking at Akita or Niigata. This cabin is the highest class “suite” on this ship. The bedroom and living room are separate, with a total area of 45 square meters. The price is $435. This is an accessible restroom. There are several washing machines and dryers next to the toilet. A utility room is located on each floor. This is the kids’ corner next to the information desk on the 3rd floor. There are vending machines for instant noodles and cigarettes, etc. Smoking room on the 3rd floor. The forward salon is located at the bow of the 4th floor. Enjoy the view in the direction of travel. The forward salon on the 3rd floor also serves as a smoking room. Coworking space and coin lockers. You can also use the elevator in addition to the stairs. To the 5th floor lobby. Movies are shown in the theater room. Today’s movie wasn’t very interesting. Today’s movie wasn’t very interesting. The Sea of Japan is rough, so motion sickness medicine is a must. After that, I enjoyed the sauna. I feel great this morning. Tobishima Island has has an area of 3 square kilometers and a population of 140. The ship is heading south on the Sea of Japan. The land visible in the distance is Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture. A drink after the bath. It’s time for lunch. Squid rice bowl for $9. The restaurant was empty at lunchtime. At this distance from land, the smartphone antenna shows 1-2 bars. Awashima Island has has an area of 10square kilometers and a population of 300. The city of Niigata is coming into view. Passing the red and white lighthouses on both sides. Niigata Port is located at the mouth of the Shinano River. The Shinano River is the longest river in Japan. We are traveling about 1 km upstream from the mouth of the river. The ferry terminal is now visible on the left. As with Akita Port, the ship turns 90 degrees clockwise. The stern is now facing the ferry terminal. The ship continues to move slowly backward. This is the dedicated terminal for Shin Nihonkai Ferry. Staff are waiting at the wharf. He throws the line onto the wharf. Then send out the rope. The slack in the rope is taken up. It’s 3:30 p.m. Arrival on schedule. The rope is under tremendous force. There are many passengers on the external deck. Niigata Port has also flourished as a port of call for merchant ships since ancient times. The high-speed boat from Sado Island has returned to port. The port call time in Niigata is also one hour. I spent my time at the café and the grand bath. You can see the wharf from the grnad bath. Beer tastes good after a bath. This is a beer exclusive to Niigata. This is a chocolate confectionery called “Akita Dog’s Booger.” Vehicles and motorcycles continue to board and disembark. Next time, I’d like to disembark in Niigata. The ship departs at 4:30 p.m. The ropes are being pulled up skillfully. Let’s set sail. Staff lined up at the wharf to see us off. Next stop is our final destination, Tsuruga. Niigata is the largest city on the Sea of Japan coast, with a population of 760,000. The crew members head to their next stations. The ship leaves the mouth of the Shinano River and heads out to sea. The seagulls seem to like this ship. The ship heads back out into the Sea of Japan. This lobby has few windows, so it feels a bit closed in. The sun sets over Sado Island. Dinner at the restaurant. Niigata is famous for its rice and sake. Assorted sashimi and thick fried tofu, total $15. The thick clouds on the horizon obscure the sunset. It seems that more passengers have boarded from Niigata. The plane took off from Niigata Airport. Four-day-old moon. It is shimmering in the smoke. Let’s go back to the cabin. I enjoyed snacks from Hokkaido and sake from Niigata. The Scorpio constellation was clearly visible. It’s almost dawn. Breakfast is Hokkaido’s “miso bread.” A faint light shines on the calm sea. The ship has already entered Tsuruga Bay. I noticed this lifting device on the external deck. It looks like it hasn’t been used for a long time. Tsuruga Bay has a typical rias coastline. The ship is going around a long breakwater that is over 1 km long. The ferry terminal is located at the base of this breakwater. The wind is also somewhat strong within the bay. The ship turns 270 degrees counterclockwise. It is rare to see such a big turn. Tsuruga was a port of departure for the continent in ancient times. The ship has completed its turn and is slowly reversing. The crew members are also standing by. This is Tsuruga Port Ferry Terminal. The ship must slow down to avoid colliding with the wharf. One crew member throws down the line. It’s hard to see, but the staff are pulling up the line. Then they pull up the rope with a truck. Rope to the bollard. Finished the first one, moving on to the second rope. The rope work at the stern is now complete. The sun rises from the top of the mountain. It’s 5:30 a.m. We arrive on schedule. Let’s return to the cabin. This was a three-day voyage. It feels short when it’s over. Disembarking from the 3rd floor lobby. The disembarkation bridge is connected to the side deck. The glass-enclosed ferry terminal is open and airy. “Lilac” will depart for Tomakomai again at 9:30 a.m. A shuttle bus is waiting in front of the terminal. It takes 15 minutes to Tsuruga Station and costs $2. This is a bronze statue of a prince from ancient Korea who came to Tsuruga. Tsuruga City is promoting itself through the works of Leiji Matsumoto. Arrival at Tsuruga Station. The Shinkansen was extended to Tsuruga in 2024. From Tokyo, it takes 3 hours and 10 minutes. Eventually, the Shinkansen will be extended to Osaka. One journey has come to an end. Thank you for watching until the end! See you in the next video!

ネーミングセンスw(ココアピーナッツって書いてあるか)
Nice video. Which is your most favourite ferry?
Now that's a long-distance ferry trip!
The present-generation Lilac is a fine Shin Nihonkai ferry, despite its age (although this ship reminds me of its ill-fated predecessor, gulp). But it's time with Shin Nihonkai is probably be numbered, due to its age. I wonder, is Shin Nihonkai building its successor?
ihr solltet die Flugratten nicht füttern
Visually, the opening and embarkation sequences were the most stunning experience I have seen on your channel yet. The evening skies, the walk to the ferry terminal as well as the very calm procedure handled by the staff and guests are absolutely riveting to watch. You can really tell, people who know and use this ferry route are exceptionally well behaved members of society. Even the group of guys who had a good time at around 13:30 don't come across as a nuisance, but rather, they seem to have a great time. What a treat to watch this video! Thank you. ✌
Another great trip and video. I noticed that one poor gull in Akita was missing one of his feet. He seems healthy otherwise and manages to stand up well. I really enjoy these videos and find them very relaxing to watch.
Now that covid is over, its good to see people on the ferries again. More fun to watch.
