【香川】高木さんの ”逆聖地巡礼”自転車で巡る夏の小豆島

On this trip in the middle of the Seto Inland Sea Shodoshima in Kagawa In Japan’s oldest chronicle, the Kojiki, it’s called “Azukishima” In the middle age, it was called “Shozushima” and eventually, it become “Shodoshima” A unique terrain of coves and peninsulas on Shodoshima Its area is 153.3 square km The 19th largest island in Japan The 2nd largest in the Seto Inland Sea, after Awaji Island In the middle of the island rises Mt. Hoshigajo, reaching 817m Its ridgeline stretches to Kankakei Gorge, with sea and mountains so close together Population about 26,000 With no airport, ferries are the lifeline for locals and the gateway for travellers Local specialities include Olives Somen Noodles Soy Sauce A filming location for the 2014 live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service Floating photos with a rented magic broom are a hit In recent years, it’s become a pilgrimage spot for the anime “Teasing Master Takagi-San” Many fans visit Tonosho, the town of this pilgrimage spot This trip focuses on Tonosho Now, let’s jump into the journey Rolling are Sushi and Legs, G’day, it’s Sushi Pedal here kicks off in Takamatsu, Kagawa Turns out, this was a Teasing Master Takagi-San Back then, I had no idea Because I missed the ferry… Let’s patiently wait for the next ferry From Takamatsu to Tonosho Port on Shodoshima 60 min by ferry, 35 min by high-speed bout A Takagi-San wrapped ferry is also running Around 5 of the 15 one-way trips run daily there’s no set schedule, it all depends on the day’s ferries Best to check at the port on the day to be sure With bicycle:Adults ¥1,070 Passenger only: Adults ¥700/Children ¥350 You can roll your bike straight onto the ferry The high speed boat is passenger only- no cars or bike allowed Spacious seats, nice and comfy An Onigiri I grabbed at 7-11 before boarding Classic Kagawa, you can even have Udon on board Udon/ ¥500 They also sell snacks and souvenirs Loads of Pokémon’s Slowpoke everywhere We can see Shodoshima now That’s the ferry to Okayama I’ll be taking on the way back So many of its local specialty olives Back then, I had no idea there was a Takagi-San ferry A moment of healing with these cute olives As usual, bikes disembark last thanks Right before landing, that’s when I feel the most excited We’ve landed at Tonosho Port you can rent a bike for ¥500 a day also leave your luggage for ¥300 enjoy carefree cycling from 9am-4pm Perfect timing, looks like the Takagi-San stamp rally just started Have’t seen the anime, but I’ll give it a go First stop, the high speed boat terminal Apparently, the 2nd floor here has a Takagi-San base area Since opening in 2023, it’s been a popular spot for anime fans from around the world Are you the PE teacher? This exploration map is a must-have Just then, a Takagi-San taxi was stopped there Not a bad way to tour the spots, either Next up, a popular photo spot at Tonosho Port A 2023 artwork, a crown woven from golden olive leaves every leaf carries a message to the sea from local students my reflection’s showing up in the glass heaps of character panels on display Unfortunately, the summer festival had ended yesterday heaps of messages from visiting anime fans as many as 54 people have come from overseas It even featured on a famous Japanese TV show It didn’t come out If nothing come out after putting in ¥100, please pick one from this box Oh, great fortune!! first great fortune in ages A view just like a scene from an anime The tunnel used in the test-of-courage scene in the anime Definitely not a tunnel you’d want to go through at night When did it start being called Angel Road? It was named in 1998 by the president of Shodoshima international Hotel at the time it spread after being used for promotion In 2009, it was designated as a “Lover’s Sanctuary” It’s now one of Shodoshima’s most iconic romantic spots You can cross Angel Road twice a day roughly 2h either side of low tide Best to check the tide chart before setting off but today, I came without checking anything You can check it on app or tourism website Solving the stamp rally puzzles I walk along It is tough because I haven’t watched the anime, or just an IQ problem?? It’s 3 times harder than I expected The road is 500m long The best timing for photo is around low tide, when the road first appears and just before it fades If you plan to cross, the best time is when the road just starts to appear The best shots are from Promise Hill, I’ll head there afterwards So many ema plaques covered in messages Look closely, the messages are written on scallop shells Better get back before the path vanishes and we’re stuck Even at low tide, condition can change with wind and waves Safety first Our next stop is the temple with a tower, just beyond the bridge Tonosho was designed like a maze to protect the port from pirates and enemy attacks As a result, the alleys are a series of dead ends, T-junction, and sharp bend The designed also helped block the wind and stop fires from spreading That’s rare colour for “Daruma” There was a 3-storied pagoda just ahead, though… I totally forgot to go there The tower is called “Seigan-no-tou” Seems like a river, but it’s actually seawater moving with the tide A strait is a narrow passage of sea that connects 2 larger seas 3 key point: formed naturally, sea on both sides, and narrow in width The maze town We’ve arrived at the final pilgrimage spot On the right is the school building, and it feels strange to ride across the school ground The atmosphere’s just like facing an RPG final Boss Stone Terraces (Sajiki) built all across the slope A Stone Terrace (Sajiki) are made by cutting slopes into tiers with stone walls, and a traditional Shodoshima style architecture, turning the slope into spectator seats The lanterns on both sides are nice touch The cicadas pick up their tempo as we get closer to the top Across the sea, you can see Angel Road where we were just before At the right low tide, the fill view of the Angel Road opens up Come to think of it, Seems the anime “Teasing Master Takagi-San” has 3 seasons and a movie If you haven’t seen it yet, let’s binge-watch with me After your binge-watch, come back to this video Thank you for watching From here, it’s the bonus stage, the Kankakei Gorge part I’d be stoked if you watched till the end I’m afraid of heights, but amazing view Well, there goes my legs… Made it to the top by 16:05 Closed 5 min earlier… missed out on food All I got was a photo of the menu Wish I could’ve had this cider I’ll make sure to come earlier next time Olive chocolate instead One day isn’t enough to see all of Shodoshima Would’ve been nice to stay a couple of nights Tonight, I’m staying at a hotel in Okayama I want to take the ferry to Uno Port, but… Haven’t checked the time, not sure if I’ll make it The last ferry might already be gone Let’s hurry safety to Tonosho Port Arrived at the ferry terminal No more ferries to Uno Port, they’d all finished Going to Okayama on the Shin-Okayama Port ferry instead Alright, 30 km to the hotel, let’s get there safe Made it safety to the hotel Thanks for watching till the end
