【ガーデン好き必見!】初夏の美しい庭景色とプロ厳選の植物を解説付きでご紹介!マーク・チャップマン氏デザインの「ピーターラビット™ イングリッシュガーデン」2025年6月編【CC字幕付き】

June 19, 2025, Fujikawaguchiko Town, Yamanashi Prefecture Peter Rabbit English Garden at Fuji Lake Motosuko Resort Perennial flowers are beginning to bloom. The beautiful season of fresh greenery is upon us. On this day, I had the opportunity to meet the garden’s designer, Mark Chapman. I was delighted to hear some valuable stories (your Japanese is excellent! 👏) While sharing these stories, in the first half I’ll be showcasing the garden’s beautiful scenery. In the second half, I’ll introduce some of the garden’s wonderful plants. Please enjoy until the end. Mr. Chapman is currently designing the British Pavilion for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. He also designed, constructed, and supervised the English garden’s plantings. Peter Rabbit English Garden Opening in 2022 in a section of Lake Motosu Resort, famous for its moss phlox. Approximately 300 species of plants are planted on a 4,600-square-meter site. Here’s a brief introduction to the 11 densely packed gardens. “① Peter Rabbit Garden” to the left of the entrance. “② English Border Garden” overflowing with flowers. “③ Silver Birch Walk” lined with white birch trees. “④ River Stream” near the stream. “⑤ Rock Garden” making use of lava from the foot of Mount Fuji. Peter Rabbit sits on a log.
“⑥ Woodland Garden” by the pond. “⑦ Natural Garden” is also adjacent. “⑧ Grass Meadow Garden” with Benjamin Bunny. In the center of the garden is “⑨ Central Grass Garden.” In the lawn area is “⑩ Grass Mound,” a slightly elevated area. “Summer Border Garden ⑪” with a lot of shrubs. Let’s take a tour of the garden together! 😀 This is the garden as of June 19, 2025. A catmint in full bloom greets you at the entrance. ♪ The soft, spreading pale purple flower spikes are so lovely! ✨ Mr. Chapman’s Special Points ① There are no annual flowers planted in this garden. Annual flowers require time and money to replant each season. Once planted, perennial flowers can be enjoyed at low cost. Not only are the flowers beautiful, but the beautiful foliage is also something to enjoy all year round. First, head to the Peter Rabbit Garden. This is a potager garden modeled after Mr. McGregor’s farm. Peach Blossom Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa ‘Duchesne ex Rozier’) A perennial strawberry with pink flowers. As adorable as a picture book illustration. 🩷 Wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) with small white flowers Apparently, there are blackberries planted within the fence. 🫐 The variety of berries they can pick looks delicious! 😋 British vegetable gardens are so beautiful! ✨ Lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina) Although now grown for decorative purposes, it was previously an edible herb. We turn right-angled next to a field surrounded by a wooden fence. Next to the burrow, Peter’s mother is reprimanding him. Don’t go into Mr. McGregor’s field! You’ll be turned into a pie! But Peter, munching on vegetables in the garden, barely escapes. Mr. McGregor dresses the scarecrow in Peter’s remaining clothes and shoes. On the left is the Border Garden. On the right is the Grass Garden. Let’s go along, admiring the two gardens. What kind of flowers will we see? I always look forward to the Border Garden 🌷 I’ll show you the flowers and plants after we’ve taken a tour of the garden. You can see the gazebo on the left. If you’re lucky, you can see Mt. Fuji in the distance. 🗻 Today, a large cumulonimbus cloud obscures the view. 🙏💦 The yellow flowers in front… Daylily This is a garden called “Silver Birch Walk.” Walking along, admiring the beautiful rows of birch trees. It feels like a refreshing highland. The leaves and small flowers below are also beautiful. ✨ Piglin the piglet and Alexander will guide you. Let’s turn here and go further in. The white trunks are Japanese birch trees. The brown trunks are apparently a type of birch from overseas that Chapman arranged for us. A pond comes into view on the left. This pond is shaped like a cute heart. 🩵 Chapman’s Special Points ② They built ponds and streams around the water. Jeremy Fisher the Frog is enjoying fishing. Watersides are home to many creatures, so They apparently built them to enrich the ecosystem. This is Peter’s cousin, Benjamin Bunny. He’s wearing Mr. McGregor’s woolen hat. It’s too big for my head. He bravely went to retrieve Peter’s jacket and shoes. We cross a small stream connected to the pond. This garden, with its continuous stream, is called “River Stream.” Beyond that, we can see the large Ryujin Pond (famous for its Diamond Fuji!) The scenery here resembles the Lake District in England (I’ve never been there 😅). Apparently, they even created a river to capture the sound of a babbling brook. This road has a wooden gate, but it’s a dead end. There are many trees on both sides. Let’s take a closer look here. Rosa rugosa and Deutzias were in bloom! A few white-flowered bush clover flowers were blooming. A gorgeous hosta with many buds. At a fork in the road, let’s take the left path first. This area is a rock garden. Chapman’s Special Point 3 When creating this garden, The many lava rocks unearthed during the excavation They apparently used every last one. Large stones were scattered here and used for decoration. Smaller stones were used to border streams and flower beds. A garden landscape unique to the foothills of Mt. Fuji is complete. 👏 Now, at the fork in the road… We’re back again. This time, let’s take the path on the right. Jemima the Duck is standing by the stream, looking up at the sky. She’s running away from home and thinking about where to go. This path passes by the stream, so The wild lava embankment and You can observe plants that prefer waterside conditions. Low-growing plants are lined up so that you can see the rocks and water. The slender flowers of the purple tradescantia are also striking. This is where the path joins with the left path we were on earlier. I couldn’t help but turn around. The white buds of the Hakuronishiki tree were so dazzling! ✨ Peter Rabbit looked so good in his blue jacket. I’m so glad you were able to get him back! 💙 If you’re lucky, you can even see Mt. Fuji from here. This is a great spot for taking commemorative photos. Be sure to come all the way to the back. Turn around and cross the stream. To the left of the small bridge is a compact woodland garden. The stream is made from the lava we just came across. It’s a shallow stream, but there were lots of tadpoles. I have a habit of peering into the water’s edge to look for living creatures. 😄 The vibrant yellow flowers of the day lily are beautiful. The contrasting purple of the Nemorosa Caradonna makes a lovely color combination. On the left is the area known as the “Natural Garden.” Everything looks natural, but… (lol) A Western-style building that fits perfectly into the English garden comes into view. From the left: Cafe, Observation Tower, and Shop. The green mountain scenery is also beautiful. The area on the left is Grass Meadow Garden. I wonder if it was designed with a meadow in mind? The grassy hill you see ahead is Grass Mound. The gently rising slope makes the green of the grass stand out. 💚 From the hill with its great view, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. An open wooden entrance leads to the neighboring flower field. Green buds of Annabelle jasmine are ready. I’m looking forward to seeing them in full bloom. Let’s walk back to the entrance along the path in the center of the Glass Garden. This is the Central Glass Garden. Glasses of all sizes are growing vigorously in the gravel. 💚 The forest in the distance is also beautiful. ✨ I planted zinnias in the flower garden next door. “Rainbow Flower Festival” planned The annual flower garden is beautiful when in full bloom, but a bit bleak during the replanting season. It’s a stark contrast to this garden, which is dominated by perennials. Beautiful grasses with a wide variety of colors, shapes, and heights. Chapman’s Special Points ④ I want you to enjoy not only the flowers but also the beauty of the foliage. A glass garden at the center is a bold idea. 😳 The “Summer Border Garden” decorates the garden’s borders. Gently curving, A beautiful array of shrubs and flowers. There are so many stylish trees… I wonder if the name “Summer” comes from the beautiful Deutzia paniculata that blooms in summer? Mark Chapman’s wonderful design and This is the result of the gardener’s daily care… A symphony of shrubs and grasses. It’s so beautiful even without flowers. 😳 Feeling the sparkling breeze and light fills my heart. This season is especially recommended, with its beautiful fresh greenery. And it even has a long free trial period!
(Admission is charged during the Fuji Shibazakura Festival and Rainbow Flower Festival.) The Peter Rabbit Cafe is closed during the free admission period. The Garden Tower and Shop & Gallery are open. Mark Chapman was born in Lincolnshire, eastern England. He studied horticulture and garden design at four colleges in the UK. After becoming independent, He has won numerous medals at various garden shows. He came to Japan in 1997 and served as head gardener, involved in garden design and construction. He founded British Creative Design in 2004. He provides design and construction services under the name Marks Garden Art. He has also published numerous books. We also worked on the Hakuba Cortina English Garden and the JICA Yokohama Port Terrace Cafe Garden. Now, let’s introduce flowers by area. This area is 1,000 meters above sea level, so the plants are planted with an emphasis on cold tolerance rather than heat tolerance. Catmint
(Nepeta faassenii) Small pale purple flowers bloom. The leaves have a refreshing fragrance. Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ A perennial salvia with deep blue-purple flower stalks that rise straight up. Euphorbia cyparissias Yellow flowers and soft leaves. Its low growth makes it suitable for ground cover. Hosta Beautiful wavy leaves with cream-colored mottling along the edges. Alchemilla mollis The combination of yellow-green flowers and pretty leaves is lovely. Next up: Flowers from the Border Garden Peony ‘Snow White’ These silky, overlapping petals are beautiful. 🤍 Pure white flowers that are also popular for bridal use. 👰‍♀️ These flowers have thick stems that are resistant to tipping, making them ideal for garden planting. It seems Potter, the author of Peter Rabbit, also enjoyed peonies in his garden. Heuchera caramel? (Heuchera ‘Caramel’?) Enjoy the change in leaf color from orange to yellow. Akebonofuuro (Geranium sanguineum f. nanum) A famous fuurosou (Heuchera sanguineum) with vibrant pink flowers. It grows softly in a dome shape and blooms all over the place. Strong in summer It grows well even when left unattended, so it’s recommended for beginners. 🔰 Catmint (Nepeta x faassenii) Not just catmint, but various other flowers are planted repeatedly. Sendaihagi White Flower (Baptisia austrails ‘Alba’) A perennial legume with refreshing white flowers resembling lupine. Although it is a tall flower, the plant is not prone to disturbance (height 90-120cm). Geranium Rozanne (Geranium ‘Rozanne’) A long-flowering geranium, blooming for about six months. Top-class flower color and hardiness. The leaves turn red in autumn and winter, and the flower color deepens. When fully grown, they spread out to about 80cm, creating a spectacular field of blooms. Pink double-flowered peony (Peonia lactiflora) Large, pale pink flowers with densely packed petals. The petals curl slightly inward, creating a gentle appearance. Without a label, the variety was unknown. Candidates include Alexander Fleming, Sarabelle, and Roosevelt. Geranium sanguineum ‘Album’ A medium-sized variety with slightly smaller white flowers (flower diameter 2.5cm, plant height 30-40cm) This one also thrives undisturbed and is recommended for beginners. 🔰 Geranium ‘Mrs. J. Bradshaw’ Dwarf Geum. Lots of small red flowers swaying. ❤️ Next, I’ll introduce the Silver Birch Walk. Daylily
(Hemerocallis dumortieri var. dumortieri) Blooms in grasslands and marshes with yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers resembling lilies. Apparently, the native Japanese flower was bred overseas to become the cultivated Hemerocallis. Spiraea japonica ‘Little Princess’ Also known as spirea, this deciduous shrub blooms with small pale pink flowers. Easy to grow and has a long viewing period, making it a recommended flowering tree for beginners. Digitalis purpurea A colorful cultivar of digitalis. Small, bell-shaped flowers bloom in slender spikes. I first encountered this flower in the Peter Rabbit picture book series. I was amazed at how many beautiful flowers there are in England! This flower is said to have been one of Potter’s favorites, planted in his garden. Polygonatum odoratum (variegated Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum) A beautiful perennial with brightly variegated leaves. Enjoy colorful foliage. In spring It is said to bloom pure white flowers resembling lilies of the valley. Introducing plants along the small river that starts from the pond. Unryu Willow (Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’) A willow with a twisted trunk, branches, and leaves. The name comes from the twisted branches, which resemble a soaring dragon. Ligularia ‘Britt Marie Crawford’ A beautiful colorful leaf with a two-tone green and bronze color. Cimicifuga simplex (also known as crow-leaf cimicifuga) Prefers slightly damp locations. Beautiful colorful leaf with copper foliage. Arachnoides standishii) A yellow-green fern with similar-looking leaves, lacking the dotted sporangia on the underside. Heuchera americana A wild heuchera found in the mountains of central America. Next up are rock garden plants. Campanula (Campanula punctata var. punctata) A perennial plant native to Japanese forests and grasslands. The pink, bell-shaped flowers are fairytale-like. 🩷 The flower in the background is a pink pitcher plant. Deutzia gracilis This deciduous shrub, with its branches covered in small white flowers, had its last remaining flowers. It spreads easily by stolons, so it needs to be pulled out by the roots as soon as possible. 💦 Brunnera macrophylla A perennial with small light blue flowers and beautiful silvery leaves with green veins. They say it grows to a large size in just 2-3 years. They don’t like high temperatures and humidity, so I killed mine in the second year. 😢 Large Akebono Furō plants were blooming side by side here, too. Hosta (Hosta) ‘Sun Power’ A bright yellow-leaf variety Lavender-pink flowers A “steep-leaf” variety that can be planted compactly Plume Vulgaris
(Prunella vulgaris subsp. asiatica) A perennial plant found throughout Japan. It produces short flower spikes and apparently comes in a variety of colors. I saw them blooming all over the place. Introducing the grass. Briza media (Dwarf cricket) A perennial grass with clusters of small, approximately 1cm-sized seeds (ears). It’s hardy and can survive both summer and winter. It also makes a lovely dried flower. Stipa ‘Angel Hair’ (Stipa tenuissima) This perennial is small enough to fit in a glass container, making it suitable for small gardens. Its hair-thin leaves are bright and refreshing. Its translucent spikes begin swaying in early summer. It’s often used to complement perennials and roses. The group plantings were also beautiful. 💛✨ I’ll introduce other grasses in the August edition. 🙏 I still haven’t been able to identify the grass without spikes. 😅 A border garden made entirely of grass is fresh and sophisticated. In modern Britain, it seems that plants other than roses are also popular. ✨ Next up are the plants for the summer border garden. Let’s start with the shrubs. Barberry ‘Aurea’ (Berberis thunbergii ‘Aurea’) A shrub with vibrant yellow leaves that remain vibrant in summer. Beautiful orange foliage in autumn. Enjoy colorful foliage throughout the year. Hakuro Nishiki (Salix integra ‘Hakuro nishiki’) Elegant white and pink variegated leaves. Deciduous shrub of the Salicaceae family I was amazed at how gorgeous it looked, like it was in full bloom! A lush area of perennials continues next to the shrubs. Ornamental blue thistles with their jagged leaves and orb-like buds. Heuchera americana is also found here. Centaurea montana ‘Purple Heart’ These flowers have white petals and purple centers, resembling sparklers. This compact, heat-tolerant perennial cornflower is a popular choice for undergrowth in rose gardens in Europe and the United States. Apparently, it’s a popular flower for rose gardens in Europe and the United States. Spiraea japonica ‘Goldflame’ Enjoy the small pink flowers and lime-green leaves. Deciduous Shrub Rosan Rose (Rosa rugosa) A wild rose with large pink flowers. In Potter’s time, only old roses were grown.
In consideration of the era, only this one species of rose was planted. Finally, we present to you Mr. Chapman’s prized waterfront scenery. As he had intended, the pond and stream were filled with Many different creatures visited the area. Jeremy’s fishing rod is a favorite of red dragonflies. He apparently drew water from a nearby well and created a pond. From the second year, Japanese tree frogs began to appear. Apparently, they began laying foam eggs on tree branches. There were many tadpoles in the pond and river. They were growing. Once they turn into frogs, they return to the nearby forest. It was a wonderful natural garden that was kind to the ecosystem.👍
