Hokkaido, there are many kinds of supermarkets. So how do you pick one? For supermarket guides we’ve covered them in previous videos. Today, we are going to introduce another in Hokkaido, supermarket that you only find here. I’ve heard the prices are low and quality is good. Is that true? Let me walk around and introduce the store’s background and see if it’s really good value. We are now at Nango 18 Chome station Alright, let’s go! From Nango 18 Chome station On the way to the supermarket I saw this Hokkaido Top-3 conveyor-belt sushi, Nemuro Hanamaru For the introduction of Nemuro Hanamaru see our earlier video. Nemuro Hanamaru They have branched at Sapporo station and Susukino but waits can exceed two hours for meal So in the branch of Nango 18 Chome do we need to queue that long? After the supermarket we’ll test it for real. How long does it take to get a seat at Nemuro Hanamaru Let’s continue to walk to our destination supermarket We’ve arrived—right behind me is today’s supermarket: COOP SAPPORO From the name you know It only appears in Hokkaido Sapporo Besides this Nango 18-chome store In Hokkaido They have many branches at different places You don’t need to come to this exact one. The one in Nango 18 Chome where we introduce today is the biggest one in Hokkaido So we’ll head straight in and see if it has everything and if prices are good. Let’s go for shopping When we were shopping in supermarket we always start at the produce section since we eat the most of it. The Shine Muscat is only cost 800Yen Some are quite large. Get one pack home to try This corn is only cost 99Yen If you’re traveling these vacuum-packed corn are super convenient. No cooking needed open and eat at the hotel. They even sell cilantro here. It’s hard to find in Hokkaido We love cilantro so we’ll grab a pack. WHen buying fish in Japan often means it’s pre-cleaned for you. After purchase you don’t need to scale or gut it yourself pretty convenient sometimes. Don’t think that sushi in supermarket isn’t fresh. This one look so good If you want sushi for the hotel I think COOP SAPPORO sushi here is worth a try. But we’re having sushi for lunch so we’ll skip it today. They have pre-shelled Hanasaki crab. If you want to eat crab The one is already pre-shlled in supermarket are great to take back to the hotel. Convenient and quick. They even sell venison. In supermarket Vension meat is rarely to see This supermarket is selling vension with multiple cuts available various parts. Nice! Many choice of wagyu here Except Hokkaido wagyu they even have Gifu’s famous Hida beefwith plenty of choices. Full of choices than other supermarket Get one for Shabu-shabu We’ve unknowingly bought a lot. But this is only about half our daily essentials. Let’s keep shopping. The deli section in this supermarket has tons of choices. Makes me not want to cook tonight. Let’s pick up something ready-to-eat. So many fried items! This crab meat is only cost 150Yen huge. Let’s add a chicken skewer. And Tang Yuan Mama favorite: cream crab croquette. When in Hokkaido, you must try the Hokkaido milk it’s really good. I didn’t drink milk when I was in Hong Kong But now, a cup everyday When you come to Hokkaido supermarket Hokkaido milk is a must-buy In the alcohol section from Japanese beers to wine and whisky the selection is huge. Tons of Japanese whiskies too. Maybe you’ll see your favorites. The NIKKA Whisky from Yoichi intro is in our earlier video. I have to drink tea every morning Tea section in supermarket I must check every time Let’s pick a new green tea to try. Grabbing as we go—basket’s full already. Let’s pay first. Loaded up! After touring COOP Sapporo we spent just over ¥8,000. At this price point Compare to many supermarket in Hokkaido not cheap but not expensive Similar to AEON’s pricing but the product variety In the number of supermarket where we have been probably the most. From deli to vegetable and seasonings to the meat selection More than other supermarket We think that this supermarket is great to walk If you are coming to Hokkaido as said earlier you don’t have to come to this Nango 18-chome branch. Many branched in Hokkaido just pick one convenient for you. One last reminder: this COOP SAPPORO is membership-based. Typically there’s a ¥1,000 membership fee you need to be a member to shop here Feels a bit like Costco. But actually when we enter to the supermarket doesn’t require showing a card and at checkout they usually don’t ask either. As a traveler you generally don’t need membership You can try to shop here without membership Hope this helps! Finish shopping let’s head to the sushi place we passed Nemuro Hanamaru Nango 18Chome and see if there’s a lunch queue. How long will the wait be? Let’s test it now. Back at Nemuro Hanamaru It’s now 1pm lunch time Do we need to line up? We’re seated already no wait at all. But at this branch same as the one we filmed before Same as the branch in Sapporo station you order by writing on paper slips. A bit inconvenient but the best part is almost no waiting. Wow—so much food! For introduction of Nemuro Hanamaru please see our previous video. We won’t go into detail today let’s enjoy lunch. This soup alone is excellent. I’ll dig in. Actually, for this part I didn’t plan to film But I have to mention We ordered a plate of salmon sushi one piece each for us Both pieces had fine bones. If you are adults and find out the bone is still good but I rarely find bones in sushi/sashimi except eel. These tiny bones can be dangerous so if you bring kids please take extra care. Not a great experience. Meal finished—stuffed. I wasn’t going to share impressions since we covered it before but Nemuro Hanamaruthe quality is truly excellent. Among the “Top 3,” Nemuro Hanamaru, TORITON Nagoyaka-tei The quality of these Top-3 around Hokkaido are at the TOP level But we had a downside today: when we had the salmon Two piece of salmon sushi had a small bone Also, the ordering method even at this branch uses paper slips. Third, paper slips mean easy to make a mistake on the order It happened today: we wanted tuna gunkan but got crab gunkan instead. These small errors do occur. But the overall quality I think Nemuro Hanamaruthe quality remains very high. If you find a branch like this one Nango 18-chome with little to no queue I recommend trying it.
