This is Yatsuo Town in Toyama Prefecture. In this town, where bears often appear, mornings begin with the sound of children’s bear bells. At 7:20 a.m., the morning light quietly washes over the cobblestones and roof tiles. Today, let’s revisit stories that are usually told only at night, under the morning blue sky. The “Jusankoku Bridge” spans the Idagawa River in Yatsuo Town. During the Edo period, rice tribute called “Jusankoku” was transported here. Yatsuo has walked a long history with this river and bridge. However, there is another legend regarding the meaning of “Jusankoku.” Long ago, when Yatsuo was a lonely village, there was a beautiful girl named Otama in Izumimachi. The young man she loved turned out to be a giant serpent. Heartbroken, Otama threw herself into a pond near the Jusankoku Bridge and became a small snake. People called it “Otama Pond,” and were troubled by the flooding caused by the serpent. But a man named Goro sealed the serpent and opened the pond, allowing the rice yield to reach thirteen koku. Since then, the area became known as “Jusankoku.” This is a “memory” engraved in the land. The forces of nature, prayers, and sacrifices all culminate in this story of the “Jusankoku Bridge.” From the Edo to Meiji periods, Japanese local society revolved around rice. Tribute was both a tax and a measure of connection between lords and farmers, reflecting seasonal results. Therefore, the name “Jusankoku” is not just about numbers. It symbolizes regional productivity, community bonds, and the accumulation of prayers and effort. Beneath this legend lies awe and faith toward nature. Prayers to calm floods and hopes for abundant harvests—at the center is the “Owara Kaze no Bon.” The Owara Kaze no Bon is the festival that made Yatsuo known throughout Japan. Its origin is ancient, aiming to pacify the wind gods and protect rice fields. The scraping of the kokyu, the rhythm of the shamisen, and the low, stretched voices—they are not mere music, but “memories” passed down through generations. Even with modernization, the Owara has been preserved in evolving forms. For townspeople, it is not just entertainment or tourism, but a ritual embedded in daily life. Notably, the festival is composed of 11 districts. Each district has its own dances and songs, harmonizing to create a rich world view. The straw hat hides the face. This gesture has multiple meanings. One is Japanese “modesty.” Beauty without showing too much. Dancers tell stories through gestures and hand movements, not facial expressions. The second is anonymity. By hiding their faces, individuals take on the role of the community. The self disappears, becoming the prayers of the town. Yatsuo is a town of slopes. Walking slowly along the cobblestones of Zenji-saka, you notice layers of time overlapping. Each stone in the walls bears the footprints of people who passed by. Viewed from above, Yatsuo is a meticulously crafted stage. Many slopes where traditional town parades are preserved are a characteristic feature of Owara. If the moonlit night creates illusions, the morning supports the reality. Zenji-saka dancing at night tells stories, while the morning Zenji-saka forms the foundation. By moving between “night” and “morning,” the Owara festival becomes more three-dimensional. The blue sky you see now supports the next night. Owara is like an ensemble created by 11 districts together. Each district has its own character, and the morning light vividly reveals those differences. Yatsuo has many slopes and narrow alleys. To protect houses from passing people, horses, and carts, fences were necessary. The historical scenery is still preserved. Everywhere you look, a wonderful townscape awaits. The Miyata Ryokan, with its long history, welcomed travelers during the Showa era. Its appearance remains unchanged, quietly conveying memories of travel. The Otaya Steps are stone steps in the town center. They are said to be named after the Otaya Festival (Otaya Hachimangu Festival) held every December in Yatsuo Town. During the Owara Kaze no Bon, tourists visit this famous spot. The steps, townhouses, and lanterns create a striking scenery. These historic steps connect the festival with the townscape and are a well-known landmark. Some say the name “Otaya Steps” comes from the “Otaya Jizo.” Like the origin of Jusankoku, there are various theories. Founded in 1889, “Teuchi Soba Takano” offers its specialty, meat soba, simple yet profound in flavor. It reflects the lives and pride of local people. From here, we see Suwa-cho Main Street, selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Roads. The charming cobblestones and preserved historical townscape are deeply linked with the Owara Kaze no Bon. Suwa Shrine watches over the history and festival of Suwa-cho Main Street, as one of Yatsuo’s guardian deities. Takeminakata no Kami, known for bravery, agriculture, and water, serves as the local guardian deity. Blending with the stone-paved streets and townhouses, it becomes part of the historic townscape. The beauty of the stones stands out, making it the best stage for Owara. Morning light illuminates the stones, and footsteps and shamisen sounds echo across time. Sennouji Temple, including its grounds and gate, is one of the stages for dances. Lantern light and kokyu music create a mystical atmosphere. Everywhere you walk, the small town is surrounded by splendid scenery. Under the blue sky, a day begins in Yatsuo. If you visit, please see with your eyes, hear with your ears, and taste a bowl of meat soba. Toyama City celebrated its 20th anniversary of the merger. To commemorate this, an event was held to showcase the culture and performing arts passed down in Toyama City. On October 5, 2025 (Sunday) from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, it took place at the Sougawa Grand Plaza. On the previous day, October 4 (Saturday), the Higashimachi float from Yatsuo was transported to the event venue. It was beautifully assembled using traditional techniques by many Higashimachi members. The origin of the Yatsuo float dates back to Kanpo 1 (1741). It is said to have started when Kamishinmachi renovated the shrine building. The feudal lord Maeda Masanobu donated dolls placed on the flower float, marking the beginning. Later, each district competed and completed six magnificent floats, 7.5 m high and weighing about 4 tons. The carvings and decorations include motifs wishing for longevity. Divine dolls and musicians adorn the procession. These floats are now designated as Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Toyama Prefecture. Preparations for October 4 proceeded… On the day of the festival, the floats were ready for display. 🏮 Etchu Yatsuo Hikiyama Bayashi A splendid float festival in Yatsuo, Toyama Prefecture. Flutes, drums, and shamisen resonate. At night, lantern-lit floats slowly move through the town. This is the “Etchu Yatsuo Hikiyama Bayashi.” Majestic and brilliant, this proud sound awakens the soul of the town. The solemn music evokes the pride of the people of Etchu. 💃 Etchu Owara Male Dance The Owara Kaze no Bon unites wind, people, and festival. First, the “male dance.” Low stance, shoulders down, expressing wind through the body. Strength residing in calmness. The spirit of men who lived with wind and protected fields. Shoulders down, low stance, feet expressing wind. A dance with silent yet powerful passion. The spirit of men living with wind and protecting fields is contained within. 👘 Etchu Owara Female Dance Next, the “female dance.” Elegant and supple, like wind caressing rice ears. Sleeve flow and footwork harmonize. Conveying gentle melancholy and beauty. The strength and tenderness of Yatsuo women shine through. 🌾 Hounen Dance by Men and Women Then, the “Hounen Dance.” Men and women dance together, celebrating wind and rice harvests. Their circular movements respond to each other. A prayer for abundant harvests itself. This dance depicts each of the four seasons. Spring celebrates sprouting. Summer prays for growth. Autumn gives thanks for the harvest. Winter wishes for the earth’s rest. Prayers throughout the seasons are alive in one dance. A beautiful dance honoring nature, people, and the cycle of life. Lanterns swaying in the wind, shamisen reverberations, and quiet footsteps. The night in Etchu Yatsuo is filled with prayer, pride, and beauty. The Toyama Traditional Performing Arts Festival concluded successfully. The “Moon-viewing Owara” of 2025 was supposed to start at 19:00, but due to heavy rain, the town procession was canceled…
