四国きっての「酷道」として知られ、実態は一部の他国道との重複区間や改良済区間を除く大部分の区間は、対面通行不可能な隘路区間が多い酷道の代表格として古くからバイク雑誌で「ヨサク」の名で頻繁に紹介されるなど、その知名度は酷道ナンバーワンとも評され、酷道愛好家らのあいだでは日本三大酷道のひとつに数えられている
