Located just a three-minute walk from Tokyo Station, near Skytree and Sensoji Temple, there’s a hidden power spot known only to those in the know. It’s Ekoin Temple. This temple, dedicated to the common people, offers memorials for the abandoned dead, common people, and even animals who died in major domestic disasters during the Edo period . Within the temple grounds is the grave of the legendary Nezumi Kozo. Carving and taking home a gravestone will bring you good fortune. It’s also popular among students, as it’s said to be effective not only for financial luck but also for passing exams . It’s said to help people pass easily. I’ve carved one myself. Ekoin Temple also has a deep connection to sumo. During the Edo period, sumo wrestling was held within the temple grounds, and it’s considered the birthplace of the current Ryogoku Kokugikan. It’s a must-see spot for sumo fans. And don’t forget Kozuka Ekoin Temple. This is Ekoin Temple and its branch temple in Ryogoku. It’s a one-minute walk from Minamisenju Station. This temple was built on the site of Kozukahara Execution Grounds, one of the three major execution grounds of Edo
. This is also the temporary burial site for Yoshida Shoin, Hashimoto Sanai, Sakuma Shozan, and Mikisaburo Bakumatsu , who were executed during the Ansei Purge. Yoshida Shoin is said to have studied Western military science and maritime defense theory at Sakuma Shozan’s private school and was greatly influenced by it. It is a fateful historical event that these two men were temporarily buried in the same place . It is also known as the place where Sugita Genpaku and Maeno Ryotaku witnessed the dissection of executed bodies, which led to the translation of the New Anatomy Book. A monument to the Organs has been erected within the temple grounds. Both Ekoin Temple in Ryogoku and Kozukahara Ekoin Temple in Minamisenju are temples with deep stories that have watched over the common people and history of Edo. These hidden gems of Tokyo are highly recommended for history buffs, sumo fans , exam candidates, and those seeking financial luck, so why not visit them at least once ?
