Hokkaido’s Highest Hot Spring Inn: Click the subtitle or CC button to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. This time, I’m staying at Hokkaido’s highest hot spring inn. It’s a member of the Japan Society for Preserving Secret Hot Springs, and offers views of the Tokachi Mountain Range right in front of me. Surrounded by nature, this region is home to many famous tourist spots. I’ll be stopping off at tourist spots along the way. I’m excited to see what kind of scenery awaits me. Located almost in the center of Hokkaido, in Kamifurano Town, a town that has developed primarily through agriculture, I’m heading for Tokachidake Onsen Ryounkaku, located at an altitude of approximately 1,280 meters. Enjoying the Hokkaido scenery, I’m almost there. Just two minutes left. Turn left here. This way. We’ve arrived. This is the parking lot for Torinuma Park. It ‘s not a particularly touristy spot, but it’s a park in the town . I decided to come here because of the spring water that springs up within the park, and its crystal clear water is so beautiful. There’s a road, shops, and houses, but right next to it is a forest like this. The swamp seems to be on the other side of the road you can see here. It’s this way. It was cloudy, so I wasn’t sure what to do, but now the sun is peeking through. The leaves aren’t all that colorful, but they’re still beautiful. There’s also a boat dock. I wonder if this boat is open all the time? It ‘s closed this year. It’s only open on weekends and holidays from April 29th to October 10th. It’s this way. What!? So beautiful! Can you see it in the reflection? It’s hard to see because of the reflection… It’s not deep, but you can see the swamp from 50 meters away. What is this? It’s huge! Is it a salmon? Wow! So many! Is it a rainbow trout? Amazing! I had a great time fishing, even though I know I might get in trouble. It’s a scenic spot throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in summer, and autumn leaves in autumn. A hidden gem beloved by locals. I thought it might be a carp, but it turned out to be a rainbow trout or something. I was surprised at how big the fish was. Even though it’s spring water, I didn’t realize the swamp would be this big. It’s impressive. If the trees were a little more colorful and the weather was better, I’m sure it would be a really beautiful place. It’s more of a park than a tourist spot, but it’s definitely worth stopping by. It’s really beautiful. The only downside is that there’s a main road right in front of it, so you can hear the sound of cars passing by. I saw a torii gate on the other side of the swamp, so I’d like to go there. I wonder how to get there. This area is also really beautiful. Wow, so beautiful. It’s already so beautiful even without the sun, so it must be even more beautiful when the sun is shining. By the way, it’s really cloudy right now. Lol, what is this? I was curious, so I came down. Ah, water is springing up from here. Water is coming from between the rocks…oh, water is springing up everywhere. That’s why it’s so beautiful. However, this platform is so wobbly, it’s scary. It’s so beautiful. This wooden board looks like it’s about to break. What is this hut for? I think this swamp could be developed into a tourist spot. It’s truly beautiful. You have to go all the way around to get to the shrine, so I think only those who want to go should go. I made it to the shrine. There was a very impressive shrine. This side is also beautiful. The sun is shining. But it’s backlit. It’s backlit from this side, so I think it would look better if I took a picture from where I was just now. lol Fishing and bird catching are not allowed in this park. It was a truly magical place. There’s nothing special there, but I stayed here for about an hour. Now, let’s head to our next destination. Our next destination is 35km and 37 minutes from here. Shirokane Birke? Oh, this is a roadside station. I’ll stop by later. This is it. We’ve arrived. There are a lot of customers. There’s a tour bus. This is the pond called the “Blue Pond.” I’d like to go see the pond first. There are really a lot of customers. They’re selling a variety of things. There are a lot of foods related to the color blue, and blue is said to suppress appetite. This pond was formed when the Biei River’s waters were stored in a concrete dam intended to contain volcanic mudflows. Therefore, it is not a natural site, but an artificial one. The reason for its blue color is thought to be the mixing of rivers with different compositions, such as the Iozawa River, which contains aluminum, and the resulting reflection of light. When sunlight collides with colloidal particles in the water, the light is scattered in various directions. It is said that this light reaches our eyes, causing the pond to appear blue. One theory is that the white soil at the bottom of the pond reflects light, enhancing the blue color. The withered larch trees, combined with the Blue Pond, create a truly magical effect. It was a truly beautiful pond. However, there were so many visitors that we decided to leave. I went. The Blue Pond is truly beautiful, isn’t it? Because it’s so beautiful, there were a lot of tourists. It ‘s 11 o’clock, and a nearby roadside station might be open at this time, so I’ll eat there and then head to a tourist spot about five minutes away. It’s also a popular tourist spot, so it might be overflowing with people. I prepaid for parking, which was 500 yen. This is the roadside station called “Biei Shirokane Birke.” I arrived at the roadside station parking lot, where they sell delicious things like Biei milk soft serve ice cream. There ‘s a restroom right in front of me. The roadside station is in the building on the other side of the parking lot. I saw some foreign visitors swimming in the Blue Pond I mentioned earlier, but swimming is prohibited. There are lots of surveillance cameras around the pond, so anyone who enters is immediately reported and monitored. If there’s anything to eat, I’ll have one. Blue Pond butter roll cookies. Ao no Shizuku beer. There are lots of amazingly colored foods for sale. Lol, souvenirs around here are expensive. There seems to be a hamburger shop here, so I’ll check it out. There’s THE NORTH FACE, a hamburger shop, activity information, showers, and a coin laundry. There are fewer people than I expected. I thought there were fewer customers, but the hamburgers are incredibly expensive. They’re cheap at 1,600 yen including tax. They’d cost nearly 3,000 yen. It’s quite expensive, so I’ll pass. Curry bread, croquette bread, and a hot dog. They seem to use Biei pork. I went to a roadside station. One thing that struck me was that for some reason there were very few people there compared to the amount of cars. There were no people in the shops at all. This is just my personal opinion, but I felt like the prices of souvenirs and food were a little high. I just bought some thick-sliced fries from a takeout shop in the parking lot. I bought a hot dog made with Biei pork and a Hokkaido croquette. Now, I’m heading to my next destination. It’s about 6 minutes from here, down the road after leaving the roadside station. We’ve almost arrived. Just 450m left. We arrived. This is the Shirogane Tourist Center parking lot, but it was full and we had to wait a few minutes. This is Biei Shirogane Onsen town, and you can see the waterfall from a nearby bridge. Let’s go see it now. Shirogane Onsen. The bridge you see over there is the bridge, and you can see the waterfall from there. There aren’t many places to park, so there aren’t many tourists. We could hear the sound of the waterfall. It ‘s amazing. It’s actually beautiful. The river has a beautiful color. Apparently , this waterfall is called “White Beard Falls” because it looks like a white beard. The waterfall drops about 30 meters, and groundwater seeps through the rocks and flows into the stream. This waterfall is classified as a “submerged waterfall,” rare even in Japan. It’s even more beautiful in winter. This is what the other side of the waterfall looks like. It ‘s a view that truly evokes Hokkaido. Snow is piling up on the mountaintops. We’ll be staying in this area tonight. It’s exciting to be staying in such a magnificent mountain setting. I can’t wait . It looks like it’s flowing out from between the sand and debris that was carried in a mudslide about 300,000 years ago. This is the sand and debris from a mudslide about 300,000 years ago, and above that is the Hiragatake lava, which was formed about 170,000 to 250,000 years ago. It seems to be divided into these two layers, and it seems like the waterfall is gushing out from between them. The Blue Pond is nice, but personally I prefer this waterfall because it’s surrounded by nature and feels more grand. It’s about a five-minute drive from the Blue Pond, so I think it’s a good idea to visit both. I’m thinking about heading to the inn on the mountain now. The smell from the restaurant here is insanely delicious. It’s making me hungry, but what should I do? I have dinner to eat at the inn I’m staying at, so if I eat here I might miss it, so I’m really worried. I gave in to temptation and decided to eat it. It’s char siu ramen. It looks so delicious. Is that ginger on top? Why not try the soup before mixing it? What do you think? Yes, it has a mild flavor. It’s light. The amount of pork is amazing. I tried the soup and it was delicious. The soup was surprisingly strong, but the ramen had a light, nostalgic feel. The owner was a very lively old man. Maybe he was an old man? Run by a married couple, it’s full right now, with a line stretching out the door, and it seems to always be like this. It smells delicious. Let’s eat. The curry is delicious and sweet, with lots of bite-sized pieces of meat, which makes it really tasty. We ate it. I’ll tell you my thoughts later. We ate dinner. After we arrived, more and more customers came in and the place was full. Most of the customers were from overseas, and we had trouble because we couldn’t speak English. The curry wasn’t pre-packaged, but rather a curry that reminded me of home, and it was delicious. Now, let’s head to the hot spring inn. It takes about 20 minutes from here. There’s also a natural hot spring along the way, so we’ll stop by there too. From here, it feels like the elevation is rising rapidly. This is the parking lot for Fukiage Onsen. We came here because there’s an open-air bath up ahead. This is an outdoor hot spring, but it’s free and offers a spectacular view. Let’s head there. The elevation is quite high here, so the temperature has dropped considerably. It must be amazing to bathe in this cold. There were a lot of cars parked, so it seems there are a lot of customers. It might take courage to get in. The water here is too hot to get in. I went for a bath. There are two baths, an upper and a lower, but the upper one was too hot for me. The lower one was just the right temperature, about 42 degrees. Customers were arriving one after another, so I couldn’t take photos. It’s only a short walk from the inn, so I’ll come back early tomorrow morning. Now, let’s head towards the hot spring. The inn is about 8 minutes away from here. Turn left. It’s a steep climb up a steep hill. Ah, that’s it. We’ve arrived. This is Tokachidake Onsen Ryounkaku, a member inn of the Society for Preserving Secret Hot Springs. Located in the natural beauty of Daisetsu National Park, you can enjoy a quiet moment while admiring the view from your room. Located at an altitude of 1,280 meters, this is the highest hot spring inn in Hokkaido. The hot springs include both iron-rich, brown-colored springs and clear, acidic springs. I was looking forward to visiting because I’d heard the views from the guest rooms are amazing. Just looking at the view from the front of the inn, you can tell how high the elevation is. This is the back of the inn. It’s a terrace. The mountainside is incredible. This is the view. Now, let’s check in. Day-use bathing is available until 7 p.m. The front desk is directly in front of you as you enter. Is this the waiting room? The dining area is right next to it. Next to the front desk is a shop. They sell souvenirs like this. These are potato chips exclusive to Kamifurano Town. Wow! Amazing! Huge! Scary! This one’s about 2 meters tall. It’s about the same height as me, so it’s pretty huge. It seems there’s a large hall up ahead. You can enjoy the view like this. The second floor is all guest rooms, with a total of 14 rooms. Room 217, I think it’s called “Kumoi no Ma.” This is the largest room, and it’s the size of four rooms. I’ll be staying in Room 202. Let’s head there. There’s a vending machine in the hallway on the second floor. Next to it is the toilet and washroom. This room doesn’t have a toilet attached, so it’s a shared toilet. There’s a microwave and kettle over there, so perhaps many people come for the hot spring cure. There’s a staircase over here, but the staircase creates a different atmosphere. This is the room I’ll be staying in tonight. Over here you can overlook the city. And this one room stretches from the far end to here. It’s amazing. The view from here is like this. The view from the largest room is like this. Let’s take a look at the room. It’s bright! It’s a 10-tatami room like this. The futon is laid out for you when you move in. There’s a sink over here, and a refrigerator over there. There’s nothing in it. Slippers, towels, and toothbrushes are available in front of the entrance. There’s also a yukata. It’s a Ryounkaku yukata. There’s a TV and sweets here, and a fan, a seat cleaner, a phone connected to the front desk, and a safe over here. The window is huge and you can enjoy the view. It seems like the sides of the window don’t open, only the middle opens. It’s cool. The view is like this. When I made the reservation, the photo showed a better view, and if I’d been in a room on the other side, the view would have been like this directly in front, but since I was on this side, it wasn’t what I expected. It may be best to call directly to make a reservation. This is the sweets served with the guest room, and although there’s nothing written on it, I think they’re probably hot spring manju. There’s a tea set here. The interior of the building is very simple. The reception is on the first floor, with the dining area to the right, a shop to the left of the reception, and a smoking area across from that. There’s a rest area to the left of the reception. As you can see from the map, the second floor is entirely guest rooms. The hot springs are located on the first basement floor. This hot spring offers two types of hot spring water: a brown hot spring rich in iron and a clear, acidic hot spring. Bathing hours are from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Apparently, men and women alternate bathing at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. There seems to be a large rock bath and a small rock bath. I haven’t been to the bath yet, so I’m not sure, but I think there’s an open-air bath as well. The manju served with the guest room was a Ryounkaku hot spring manju. Since I have some time before dinner, I’ll take a dip in the hot spring. The large public bath is on the first basement floor. It seems like there are a lot of day-trippers bathing at this time of day. There are separate men’s and women’s baths. I wasn’t given permission to take photos here, so I can’t show you, but please feel free to come and try it out. I went into the large public bath. Immediately to the left as I entered, there is a highly acidic hot spring. It’s colorless and transparent, with a temperature of about 32 degrees Celsius, which is quite cold. Next to the acidic hot spring is the indoor bath, which is a brownish-brown hot spring at 42-43 degrees Celsius. It had an iron smell . The open-air bath was also brownish-brown with an iron smell, but the water was cooler, around 35 degrees Celsius or even colder. It felt great to warm up in the indoor bath, then alternate between the open-air bath and the highly acidic hot spring. The front desk told me that the shower pressure was low and that it would improve over the night, but it really was low. It took a really long time to wash. Guests staying on this side can enjoy this view while they’re there. It’s 6 o’clock now, so I’m heading for dinner. The appetizer arrived. There’s no menu, so I don’t know what it is, but I’ll eat. Grilled scallops with mushrooms . This white thing is green thrush. Salmon roe and salmon? Oh, delicious. This is conger eel, maitake mushroom, and shishito pepper tempura . Absolutely delicious. Rich . Mushrooms and scallops go so well together. Sweet shrimp, tuna, and green thrush. The sweet shrimp are big. Soft and delicious. Rice, miso soup, and pickles. This is roast pork. I had dinner. The food was delicious, but I felt there weren’t many side dishes. I was full because I could have seconds of rice. While you can have seconds of rice, you can’t have seconds of miso soup, so that’s something to be aware of. I’m going to take a bath in the large public bath, do a little work, and then go to bed. Good morning. It’s 5:00 AM. I’m sneaking out of the inn and heading to Fukiage Onsen. It’s still pitch black, so I’ll wait for it to get a little lighter. I headed toward the parking lot first. I’ll wait there for it to get light. We’re almost there. There are people there. So early in the morning. It’s pitch black and creepy, but I want to go to the hot spring. There’s a car, so I think someone’s in there. The temperature is about 2 degrees right now, so it’s cold. The water here is quite hot, so I think it will warm you up. I came here after it got light because I thought there might be bears around. Like yesterday, it’s too hot to go in. I went to the hot spring. I soaked in it for about an hour and a half. lol I met someone who was traveling in Hokkaido with me, and we chatted. I’m really grateful for their help with taking photos. It’s almost breakfast time, so I’ll be back soon. Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! It’s cold outside, but the bath was warm and warmed my body. I got out of the hot spring because it was too hot, but the temperature outside was so low that my body quickly cooled down, so I kept going in and out. I headed to the breakfast area. Breakfast was a buffet. They also had bread and other items. Drinks included milk, orange juice, and coffee. They also had deep-fried papaya. Thank you for the meal. I had breakfast . While I was there, I also went to the public bath. As for the price, it was 31,500 yen for two adults, including one night and two meals. That’s 15,750 yen per person. I felt like there weren’t many side dishes for dinner. I guess it’s like paying for the accommodation in such a natural setting. The hot springs here are amazing, and being able to stay in such a natural setting, I didn’t think it was that expensive. You can enjoy this natural setting, so I recommend staying here if you have the time. Personally, I think the rooms on the other side offer a more dynamic view, so if you want to stay on that side, I recommend calling to confirm whether a room on this side is available before booking. Now, let’s check out. Now, let’s head to our next destination. The view was truly spectacular. Hokkaido is truly magnificent. This time, I stayed at the highest-altitude hot spring inn in Hokkaido. What did you think? I recommend it, as you can enjoy the view even just for a day trip. See you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.
