【九州の絶景】熊本・大分の名瀑9選

Spectacular views of Kyushu This time, we will bring you the spectacular views of waterfalls. Introducing 10 famous waterfalls in Kumamoto and Oita. First, we will take you to Kikuchi Valley. It is a tourist attraction that represents Kikuchi, which has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best forests for forest bathing, 100 best waterways in Japan, 100 best waterfalls in Japan, and 100 best water source forests. The waterfall’s spray of water at dawn gives it the name “Reimei,” which means dawn, because it resembles a morning mist. It is a beautiful waterfall with a moss-covered shore and a pool of water. Tengu Falls/Ryugabuchi Tengu Falls is said to be a place where Yamabushi (Bushi) washed and purified themselves during their training. The waterfall has a height of 8 meters and the water falling violently is a sight to behold. There is a legend that a dragon once lived in Ryugabuchi, which has a beautiful and mysterious cobalt blue color. 430,000 Waterfalls 430,000 Waterfalls has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. It was named after receiving 430,000 votes in Kyushu Nichiichi Shimbun’s 100 Scenic Spots selection. There is also a theory that this comes from the average daily water volume of 430,000 koku (approximately 78,000 tons). Although it is located at the source, this waterfall boasts an abundant amount of water. Next, we will show you Harajiri Falls, which flows down from the Ogata River in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture. The Tulip Festival is held here every year from early April to mid-April. There is a well-maintained promenade where you will be greeted by 300,000 different types of beautiful tulips . The torii gate is impressive and photogenic. The scenery is flat and relaxing, making it difficult to believe that there is a huge waterfall nearby. It is known as a very rare waterfall because it “suddenly appears in the countryside” and has been selected as one of the “100 best waterfalls in Japan.” You can get a complete view of the waterfall from the suspension bridge. By the way, this suspension bridge is made of wood, so it makes a creaking sound every time you walk on it. The waterfall is horseshoe-shaped and cascades over a width of 120m, with a drop of 20m. The bedrock on which the water from this waterfall slides is the result of a large pyroclastic flow caused by the Aso volcano that erupted 90,000 years ago, which cooled and solidified. It is believed that this beautiful waterfall was created because it has many cracks called columnar joints, which makes it easy to split vertically. If you go down to the riverbank, you can look up at the impressive waterfall. The water is splashing and the surrounding area is filled with natural negative ions. Jion Falls is located in Kusu Town, Oita Prefecture, along National Route 210, which connects Fukuoka and Oita. Exit the roadside station “Jion no Takikusu” along National Route 210 and arrive at the waterfall in about 2 minutes on foot! When you get off the roadside station , you will find Sobadokoro Suigetsu, which serves Juwari soba noodles, and Yamaura Bench, a coffee shop where you can enjoy Oita’s Dago soup. Jion Falls is located at the confluence of the Yamaura River and the Kusu River, both of which originate from Mt. Mannen, and has a total drop of approximately 30 meters, with an upper level of 20 meters and a lower level of 10 meters. If your timing is right, the light will shine into the upper waterfall, creating a mystical atmosphere. Previously, it was called “Urami Falls”, where there was a promenade leading to the back side of the waterfall, and you could even go inside, but now, due to flood damage, entry to the back side of the waterfall is prohibited. There is an old story about this waterfall, the rising Kiryu. It is said that once upon a time, a dragon lived at Jion Falls and got along well with the villagers. However, one day, the dragon fell ill, and the villager became worried and consulted a monk, who cured the dragon by making it climb into the sky.As a reward, the dragon brought abundant rain to the village, which brought an abundance of crops. Jion Falls is an auspicious power spot Chinda Falls was formed about 90,000 years ago by the erosion of a valley filled in when Mt. Aso erupted. It is a famous old waterfall where a large amount of water flows down a cliff of Aso welded tuff, and the scenery lined with columnar joints was so impressive that Sesshu visited it in the Muromachi period and depicted it in his “Chinda Falls”. The waterfall spreads across the entire width of the river, and it is also called the Niagara of Bungo. Before going to the waterfall, I visited Kiki Shrine. There was a female waterfall behind the shrine, but I couldn’t see the drop or the whole waterfall. You can’t see the waterfall at all along the way because it’s covered with trees, but the sound gradually gets louder. When you arrive at “Takimidai”, you will see the impressive waterfall making a roaring sound right in front of your eyes! Chinda Power Plant Ruins The Chinda Power Plant Ruins, located next to Chinda Falls, are the remains of a power plant built by the Bungo Electric Railway in 1909 to supply electricity to trains, as well as to Oita Town and other areas. In Taisho 12, the new sinking power plant was completed downstream, ending its role. The Ono River’s Otaki Falls and the Hirai River’s Medaki Falls converge. The male waterfall is 100 meters wide and about 20 meters high, and the female waterfall is 10 meters wide and about 18 meters high. Next, we will show you Nabegataki Falls, located in Oguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a waterfall with a height of about 10m and a width of about 20m, and is a popular spot where a tea commercial was filmed. It is said to have been created by the huge eruption that created the Aso caldera about 90,000 years ago, and the wide, curtain-like appearance of water flowing down from the steps of the mountain created by lava is very elegant. You can walk along the riverbank or sometimes behind a waterfall to see the flow up close. To get to the back side of the waterfall, you have to pass through a slightly difficult place next to the waterfall. If you pass through here, you can go to the back side of the waterfall. What do you think? This view! It is quite rare to find a place where you can see the waterfall from the back! The light was shining right in and I was able to see a fantastic atmosphere! The green color of the forest is reflected in the waterfall basin and it is very beautiful! “Hakusui Falls”, which is also famous as a power spot, is a registered national monument, and the waterfall and its surrounding area have been selected as one of Oita Prefecture’s 100 Scenic Spots. The origin of the name is that “spring water flows from the rock surface to form a waterfall, and the water looks white,” and another theory is that because there are 99 streaks that make up the waterfall, 1 was subtracted from “Hyakusui Falls” to make it Shiramizu Falls. As soon as you cross the bridge, you will be surrounded by nature! I saw a small river! This is a stream flowing from “Hakusui Falls”! “Hother Falls” is a waterfall created by a stream that flows from Hakusui Falls! It’s a little hard to see, but there are benches in front of the waterfall! Let’s climb further from here! It’s almost time to reach “Hakusui Falls”! If you go up the stairs further, you will see a beautiful stream! It is upstream of the mother waterfall! Once you reach the top of these stairs, you will finally see “Hakusui Falls”! This is a majestic waterfall that is 72 meters high and 8 meters wide, falling from a cliff surrounded by virgin forest, allowing you to enjoy the powerful scenery created by nature. When you get to the front of the waterfall, you can feel its power! Surrounded by quay walls, you can feel the great outdoors! The exposed rock surface of the waterfall is rugged and worth seeing! There are waterfalls on both the right and left, so you’ll never get tired of looking at them! You have to walk for about 15 minutes to see the promenade, but I think it’s worth it! Next, we will introduce Meoto Falls located in Minamioguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Speaking of Oguni Town in Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, “Nabegataki” is famous, but we also recommend you to visit “Meotou Falls”, which is located 5 minutes by car from Kurokawa Onsen, one of the most popular hot springs in Japan. There are many waterfalls with the name “Meotou Falls,” but I think the one we will be introducing here is the most appropriate to be called “Meotou Falls” in the true sense of the word. The reason is that it is a unique waterfall that connects two rivers into one. Furthermore, in the center of the Meoto Falls, “Otokodaki” and “Onnadaki,” there is a large tree that stands tall. It has also gained popularity as a power spot for matchmaking, and now it is a happy date spot known only to those in the know on social media such as Twitter and Instagram. I would like to introduce “Ameushi Falls” located in Takeda City, Oita Prefecture. It is a waterfall with an unusual name, written as “yellow” and “ox”, and pronounced “Ame-ushi” (yellow cow). It’s a hidden tourist spot that even Oita Prefecture residents don’t know much about, and both the waterfall and the path to it are a healing spot where you can feel the mystical and calm atmosphere. In 2022, it was used in a commercial for “Amazon Prime” and became a hot topic. There are cliffs on both sides, making you feel as if you have suddenly wandered into an unexplored region. Although there are well-maintained promenades, there are many rugged, natural paths with moss growing on them, so please be careful. You can see the waterfall in about 2 to 3 minutes after descending to the river. A waterfall with more water than you can imagine. It’s powerful and makes a roaring sound. I could never have imagined that such a view would be waiting for me. The endless, roaring waterfall is so beautiful that you can stare at it forever. According to Taketa City Tourism Association “Taketabi,” the waterfall has a height of about 25 meters. Thank you for watching until the end. Please subscribe to the channel and leave a comment. Thank you for your encouragement. The information was from Kyushu Sora.
