開湯700年の歴史を守り続ける秘湯宿【山形県 白布温泉♨️湯滝の宿 西屋】日本秘湯を守る会
Shirabu Onsen is a mountain hot spring resort located at an altitude of approximately 900m near the Tengendai Plateau, the gateway to climbing Mount Nishiazuma in Yamagata Prefecture . The hot springs are said to have first opened in 1312, the first year of the Showa era (1312), at the end of the Kamakura period, approximately 700 years ago . A wounded white-spotted hawk was discovered bathing there by a samurai of the time, who named the bath Shirabu Takayu (White Spotted Hawk Bath). The three iconic hot spring inns of Shirabu Onsen, Azumaya, Nakaya, and Nishiya, were all built during the Bunsei era of the Edo period. All three were thatched-roof, gabled-roof inns, neatly lined up against the mountain backdrop. However, in March 2000 , a fire originating in Nakaya completely burned down both Nakaya and Azumaya. A year and a half later, Azumaya was rebuilt in the same location. Nakaya has reopened at its new annex, Fudoukaku, in a different location. A “yu-guruma” (bath wheel) with free-flowing hot spring water has now been installed at the former Nakaya site. Nishiya, which miraculously escaped the fire, is approximately 200 years old and the main building, approximately 100 years old, is designated as a landmark of Yonezawa City. The current owner, the 19th generation owner , is the inn. The inn consists of a main building, a main building, and a detached building, all of which have different architectural styles, totaling 15 rooms. Only junior high school students and older are allowed to stay overnight . Smoking is strictly prohibited on the premises. Children are welcome to use the baths for day trips. Maintaining the thatched roof requires periodic re-thatching. This channel also participated in a crowdfunding campaign! The newly renovated Nishiya with its thatched roof is a member of the Japan Society for Preserving Hidden Hot Springs. You can earn stamps by booking through the Society’s official website or by calling the inn. Once you collect 10 stamps, you can stay at one of the inns for free, which is a great deal! 👍 Each inn’s stamps are unique and visually appealing, so why not try collecting them all? (You can get a stamp book at each inn.) ^^ We’ll show you Nishiya’s lovely stamp at the end of the video. ^^ Access: From JR Yonezawa Station, take the local bus bound for Shirabu Onsen Tengendai for about 40 minutes. The bus stop is right in front of the inn. ♪ About 30 minutes from the Yonezawa Hachimanbara IC on the expressway. Main building , front lobby. Main building side. The guest rooms are here. There are no vending machines at the front desk, but beer, tea, etc. are sold at the front desk. There is a convenience store in front of the front desk. They sell carefully selected goods and ingredients used in meals. Original White Monkey Kokeshi dolls. Coffee and tea are available for free here. There are plenty of stylish mugs available👍The lobby has a wonderful historic feel with beams and pillarsAfter breakfast, there is a surprise waiting for you (^^♪ When viewed from outside , it corresponds to the area with a thatched roof.In the center of the historic main house dating back to the Edo period, there is an irori hearth and valuable old documents such as hanging scrolls and calligraphy remain intact. At the time, there was an exhibition by the Gourd Lovers Club^^ We were given an explanation of the check-in facility, meal times, etc.Today ‘s room is in the detached room “Niji” .The accommodation fee will be explained when the room is introduced. As we were shown around the facility to our room, We had someone carry our luggage for us. We’ll walk through the hallway and introduce you to the rooms and main facilities. The main building entrance features a lovely hallway symbolizing the Nishiya. The lounge is a resting area open to daytime bathers. My wife was enjoying a draft beer. 😆 Along the way, you’ll see the stairs to the second floor. On the right are the guest rooms: Rindo, a small room facing the road ; Benihana, a 6-tatami room with a bed ; Kobushi, a small room facing the road. Both rooms have beds. 👍 You can see the waterfall bath across the street. Can you see the hot water coming out from below? ^^ Yoshino, a spacious Japanese-Western room for one person. I’ll introduce the waterfall bath later . In front of the bath, there’s a shared sink, refrigerator, and water. Now, let’s climb the stairs. ♪ There are many stairs and steps in the building, and no elevators. Please be careful if you’re elderly or have mobility issues. The second floor is divided here, but if you go to the left you will find five rooms. All rooms have beds. Akatsuki: A room close to the restroom. Sofu: A room close to the restroom. Kajika: A Japanese-Western room for one person. Taki: A waterfall bath and a family bath are close by. Wakaba: A corner room. Further back you will find a washbasin and a private bath. The washbasin has a continuous flowing hot spring . Other rooms on the second floor include Nishiyama: A sunny corner room. Gassan: A good old Japanese-style room. Azuma: A Japanese-style room from the early Showa period. Seiryu: A popular room with a bed. Behind the shared toilet and refrigerator on the second floor is a dining room and a detached room. There are many stairs because the building follows the terrain, and they are decorated with kimono fabrics. ♪ The stairs leading to the dining venue, the Yunohana Dining Annex. 😅 Once you reach the top of the stairs, you will find the two detached rooms (Niji, Nishiki). One of the features of Nishiya’s accommodation plans is that they provide rooms exclusively for single guests. Drinks are included with dinner (some are charged extra) . Our room this time was the detached room “Niji”, with its wooden corridor and sliding doors, giving it a Japanese feel. ^^ The detached rooms are equipped with a refrigerator, toilet, and air conditioning. There was a hair dryer, razor, and shower cap. The toilet in the detached room ” Niji” has a washlet . There are two rooms, one 10 tatami mats and one 8 tatami mats, in a purely Japanese style. A lovely room with a purely Japanese feel that gives off a sense of history♪ In the 8 tatami mat room, futons are laid out during meals. You can see the roof, and in the distance you can see the mountain scenery. It’s a set of insect traps (there were actually quite a few stink bugs 😅) The cups are cute😍 The tea snacks were donuts. There was a bath towel, yukata, and a face towel with your name on it. WiFi is available in the Japanese-style 8 tatami mat room . There are no problems with mobile phone reception either. I tried on a yukata~^^ The large yukata has the name Nishiya on it. A medium-sized yukata . A small yukata . The small yukata has the name Nishiya written in Roman letters. Introducing the baths: The men’s bath is in the front and the women’s bath is in the back, but there is a hot spring flowing down the hallway. Let’s take a look from inside to see why it’s like this^^ Men’s bath The wooden changing area exudes a sense of history. It’s spacious, and includes amenities like a sink, hairdryer, and razor. The pH is 7.6, and the water is sulfur-calcium sulfate hot spring water at 53°C. No water is added, heated, circulated, filtered, or disinfected; the waterfall bath is 100% natural hot spring water. The men’s bath is impressive, with the entire bath made from cypress all the way up to the ceiling. You can hear some dynamic sounds coming from the back… Nishiya’s specialty, the “Yutaki” waterfall , is 100% natural hot spring water flowing from Nishi-Azuma, creating a dynamic waterfall. The bath is shallower at the bottom, allowing you to bathe like a waterfall. The bath was built about 300 years ago, in the mid-Edo period, from granite quarried from the foot of Mount Azuma, and is said to have been preserved in its original form. The water is colorless, but there are floating deposits of hot spring water. There is a faint smell of sulfur. The hot spring water overflows from the bathtub and flows out into the corridor through a gap below. The hot spring is only for pouring water over yourself, but it is quite hot. There is a washing area, but no shower or faucet. It is the old-fashioned way of scooping water from the bathtub and rinsing it away ^^ Secret Hot Spring Kumazasa shampoo is provided♪ The changing area in the women’s bath is newer than the men’s, and is slightly larger. There are amenities such as lotion and cotton pads. The waterfall bath is made entirely of cypress, just like the women’s bath , and has a wonderful atmosphere and layout that is almost identical. 。 English : My impressions after actually taking a bath . The sound of the waterfall is loud . If you choose the right time you can enjoy the hot spring all to yourself (^^♪ I also recommend it for day trips or solo overnight stays^^ I’d like to introduce the family bath (private). You can use the family bath if it’s available. Please return the ticket to “in use” before entering. There was a family bath, a changing area , a razor, and a shower cap. The family bath is completely different from the waterfall bath and is also nice♪ It’s a stone tub large enough for about two people. The water is colorless and transparent, but there is a deposit of hot spring water at the bottom. You can wash your body while pouring hot water over yourself. It’s time for dinner . The dining venue is the large hall, and seats are assigned to each room. Appetizers and main dishes have been prepared on the table. The shabu-shabu meat looks delicious😋 [Appetizers] Layered steamed cabbage, bite-sized buns, sake kasu . The aperitif is La France sake from Tendo Dewazakura Sake Brewery. A distinctive feature of the food at Nishiya is the “Obanzai” served in the center of the venue. Food other than the appetizers and main dishes is served in a half-buffet format, so you can eat as much as you like, I think it’s also great because it reduces food waste. Chicken cream stew, Tengen pork nikujaga , Yonezawa tofu and Yamagata chicken minced meat sauce, all served hot 👍 Yamagata specialty, Aoba shigureni, lightly pickled vegetables, apparently change daily, the proprietress’s homemade salted koji chicken with plum sauce, seafood marinade , cucumber and tomato, refreshing salad, lotus root with sweet miso , rice, Tsuyahime from Yamagata Prefecture, you can choose your favorite bowl ♪ This time, it’s a dog bowl ^^ Locally produced miso soup, from the local Yonezawa area Hanakaku Miso and Kuwabara Tofu Shop . Dessert is strawberry mille crepe . Drinks, including alcohol, are also available for free.👍 Drinks in the refrigerator are free on the left, and paid drinks on the right . Drinks on this side are free and all-you-can-drink.👍 There are a variety of bowls and glasses. ♪ First, let’s toast with an aperitif of La France wine.♪ Dewazakura Sake Brewery’s La France wine is sweet and fruity. A free can of chuhai is also available .^^ This time, we have the shabu-shabu course. Which do you prefer, shabu-shabu or sukiyaki? Let’s eat. [Appetizer] Today’s sake kasu. We had sake with herring roe salad.^^ Yonezawa local sake, Toko (free). [Appetizer] Layered steamed cabbage. [Obanzai] Yonezawa-made tofu and Yamagata chicken minced meat sauce. [Obanzai] Chicken stew in cream sauce. [Obanzai] Tengen pork nikujaga. It’s great that you can adjust the amount of food you eat with the obanzai.👍 The proprietress’s homemade salted koji. Marinated seafood with chicken and plum sauce , lotus root with sweet miso dressing, Yamagata specialty, Aoba Shigureni, made by Nishiya, local dish “hiyashiru” This is the first time I’ve seen this traditional dish that has been passed down in Yonezawa since the Warring States period , but it reminds me of Fukushima’s “kozuyu” . The small pieces of ingredients and the lightly seasoned cold broth go really well together . In Yonezawa, it has been popular as a dish to entertain guests on auspicious occasions such as New Year’s. When my wife has meat dishes, she eats them with rice and miso soup ^^ In our hometown of Yonezawa, We start with miso soup made with Hanakaku Miso and Kuwabara Tofu Shop, followed by shabu-shabu ♪ The vegetables are large, so we’ll cook them thoroughly before eating. I’m watching the people around me ^^ It seems like quite a few people are choosing shabu-shabu , and it’s starting to cook (^^♪ Yonezawa beef is one of Japan’s three great wagyu beefs, along with Omi beef and Matsusaka beef. I’m wondering which sauce to choose ^^ They look happy (^^/ nodding ^^ We ‘ll eat the vegetables with ponzu sauce . The refreshing taste is one of the great things about shabu-shabu, and this dish is also one of Nishiya’s charms. Yonezawa beef is tender and has the perfect amount of fat 👍 Strawberry milk There are many elaborate bowls, too. It ‘s nice to be able to choose your bowl. Strawberry flavored with fluffy cream ♪ Let’s have dessert early ^^ The Yonezawa beef shabu-shabu was the best, as expected . Thank you for the meal. After dinner… a thick mattress is laid out ^^ The night view. The hot spring water is constantly running in the main house bathroom 😳 Time-lapse video from the room. Good night ~ Zzz . The morning starts with coffee in front of the front desk (^^ ♪ It’s breakfast time. Breakfast is served in the same venue and at the same table, and breakfast is buffet style with a wide variety of obanzai dishes ♪ First, hot dishes. Yudofu and sausage. The yudofu is delicious with homemade ginger tsukudani (simmered ginger) made by the landlady. ♪ Burdock root with lots of fiber, grilled salmon, umami miso, mushrooms, hijiki seaweed stew, honey pickled plum, lightly pickled raw cod roe, simmered bracken, vegetable salad . There were three types of dressing. Potato salad, natto, and soft-boiled egg. Locally sourced miso soup for breakfast. For breakfast, rice was Tsuyahime rice. 👍 Drinks were milk and orange juice, and for dessert, yogurt. Once everything was arranged, it looked like this. It really felt like a Japanese breakfast. The mushrooms and other mountain vegetables were also a nice touch. I drank the milk first thing in the morning, as usual. ^^ Umami miso , rich mushroom miso pickles, and large mushrooms freshly picked from the mountains. 😳 Yamagata brand rice, Tsuyahime rice, was also excellent. ♪ The yudofu was homemade ginger tsukudani (simmered ginger) made by the landlady, and the sauce had a strong ginger flavor. I brought two furikake ( sparkling seasoning ). See you, Noritama… lol It’s mean ^^ Sometimes furikake is good, too. Miso soup made with local Yonezawa tofu and miso, bracken stew, and it’s nice to be able to enjoy mountain delicacies 😋. Homemade country cuisine is the best. Burdock root with lots of fiber, hijiki seaweed stew, sausages, and the cat chopstick rests are cute ♪ There’s also something to look forward to after breakfast ^^ Grilled salmon, the classic soft-boiled egg, yogurt for dessert, and coffee after the meal are also available. The breakfast buffet, where you can choose your favorite, is very satisfying with a menu that is typical of Japanese cuisine. Thank you for the delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we met Nishiya’s famous mascot cats, Onden-kun and Kagura-kun, in the lobby! Both were very quiet and slept the whole time ^^ lol. Let’s relax in the lobby for a while before checking out ♪ Check-out Shirabu Onsen Yutaki no Yado Nishiya How was it? We received a secret hot spring stamp ^^ It was a wonderful stay where you can feel the history of Shirabu Onsen everywhere, with thatched roofs and the magnificent hot spring waterfall from long ago . Food, drinks, and services may be subject to change, so please check the official website for the latest information before heading out.
