Exploring a Hidden “Otherworld” Restaurant in the Mountains of Japan

In this video, I visited the legendary drive-in spot “Irori Sanzoku (Kuga branch)” in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

A place known to every local in Yamaguchi, it appears suddenly in the heart of the mountains, marked by the glow of lanterns and torches. It’s a one-of-a-kind theme-park-style restaurant that feels like a time slip into the Sengoku period or the world of a Studio Ghibli film.

I captured the experience of biting into their famous “Sanzoku-yaki” (grilled chicken) and devouring the massive “Sanzoku-musubi” (giant rice ball). In winter, you can enjoy the luxury of eating hot food in outdoor kotatsu seats while surrounded by nature. Since they are open late into the night, the illumination creates a truly mystical atmosphere. If you’re traveling or driving through Yamaguchi, this is an absolute must-visit spot.
