今回は大分のご当地ソングとして、明治時代に誕生し、文部省唱歌としても広く親しまれてきた不朽の名曲『荒城の月』（土井晩翠作詞・滝廉太郎作曲）を心を込めて歌い上げます。歌詞に描かれた美しい情景と、どこか物悲しくも気品あるメロディをお楽しみください。

Hello everyone! In this 45th installment of our journey through Japan’s local songs, we travel to Oita Prefecture, which marks the grand finale of our Kyushu chapter. As we will be crossing over to Shikoku in our next stream, we wrap up our time in Kyushu with deep local trivia and an emotional performance.
For Oita’s featured song, I perform the timeless classic “Kojo no Tsuki” (The Moon over the Ruined Castle), a masterpiece composed in the Meiji era by Rentaro Taki with lyrics by Bansui Doi, which has long been beloved as a Ministry of Education school song. Please enjoy its beautiful, melancholy, yet elegant melody.
In the video, I delve into the historical background of Okajo Castle in Taketa City, Oita, which inspired this beautiful song. I also clear up a common misconception about Oita’s famous luxury gourmet item, “Shirohita Karei” (castle-bottom flounder). Many mistake it for being connected to Okajo, but it actually originates from Hijijo Castle in Hiji Town, which faces the ocean. This premium marbled flounder thrives near the castle walls where fresh subterranean water gushes into the sea, creating a perfect habitat. Watching this will completely update your knowledge of Oita’s history and culinary culture!
Furthermore, I explore the charms of Oita, from the famous Beppu Hot Springs to Usa Jingu Shrine (Usa Hachiman), the root and head shrine of all Hachiman shrines across Japan. I also discuss premium local seafood like Seki-aji (horse mackerel) and Seki-saba (mackerel) caught in the rough currents of the Hoyo Strait, making you crave a nice glass of Japanese sake.
