It is said that Kubo Inari Shrine was founded in 1544 when two white foxes appeared at the base of an old cherry tree on the former shrine grounds, and villagers who found their appearance mysterious enshrined a shrine there. In the same year, the chief priest of Atago Shrine, Moriya Izunokami, enshrined a branch of the spirit of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine in Kyoto. The fox mound and the water basin were donated by many worshippers and are designated as tangible cultural properties of Iruma City.
