14 Days to Delivery! How to run a Japanese Izakaya Pregnant!

The baby’s due date is in about two and a half weeks. But I can’t really sit down at work, you know? See you later! Since my husband is always right beside me, I don’t feel anxious at all. I think that’s the reason I’ve been able to keep working. I’m really grateful. Good morning! I’m in my tenth month—almost full term now. The baby’s due in about two and a half weeks. All that’s left to do now is pray for the birth to go smoothly. Today, we’ll first send off my daughter to daycare, then go shopping for veggies, and go stock up on alcoholic drinks too. I’m heading to buy veggies, and alcohol too. Then I’ll head back to the restaurant. This is a grouper. Here in Kyushu it’s called ‘Ara’. If you’re visiting Hakata, I really want you to try this fish! It’s a white fish, and we serve it all year round. Please try Hakata grouper sometime! My belly tightens up when I carry anything heavy. That part’s been kinda tough lately. The shop is only closed once a week. And I bet my husband would love to just sleep through that whole day. But he’s always thinking about me and our daughter, and takes us places like strawberry picking. He gives his best to create fun time for us as a family. I’m really grateful for that. This place is the first time we’ve worked together, and I’d mostly only seen the private side of him before. Seeing how hard he works has made me fall for him all over again. Hi there! So that’s a bit tough, yeah. But I’m managing by checking in with how my body feels. I think I’ll start my maternity leave soon, but I wanna help out however I can, so I’m giving it my all. I really appreciate what my wife is doing for me. Back when I was working at an Izakaya, I decided to switch to working at a fish shop. She was pregnant with our daughter back then, and the baby was due soon. Working at the fish shop, my income was only half of what I got before. But she said, that it was important for me to study, for our future. She supported me in my decision. That kind of kindness really means a lot to me. Welcome! Please take a seat over there. We’ve got Yamanokotobuki sake, and also Mi no Kotobuki. This one’s Yamanokotobuki sake from Kurume. Sorry, we are pretty packed at the moment… it doesn’t seem like we’ll have place for two right now. I came here from Tokyo today. I’m from Kumamoto. I actually came to eat here back in January, and came back again today! Thank you for the food! I’ll be in your care from now on. Thank you very much! It’s around 8:30pm now. I’ll head out to pick up our daughter now, then I’ll give her a bath and put her to sleep. Since I’m on my feet all day, my belly starts getting tight from standing too long. But having so many customers coming in the shop really keeps me going. Once our second child is born, our lifestyle might change again, but I hope I can still be there to support the shop. We actually went to the same elementary and middle school. We even lived in the same apartment complex as kids. I was on the 10th floor and she was on the 14th. We kinda knew each other, but didn’t really talk until we were adults. I always wanted to go abroad— And I was actually planning on going on a working holiday. But that all went up in smoke when COVID hit. That’s when my wife, who was living in Osaka, came back to Fukuoka too. Her cousin was working with me, and we all ended up going out for drinks—and that’s how we met again. What I appreciate most about my wife, honestly, how much she cares for the kids. She helps me focus on work— like when I come back from the market in the morning, she takes our daughter to another room so I can rest. She’s always thinking of ways to help me out. I see how he gets up early every day to go to the market— His sleep schedule’s all over the place, and sometimes it takes a toll on his body. But he still goes every day. I honestly wouldn’t be able to do it. Keeping a shop going, is actually a really hard thing to do. But he seems to really enjoy his work, from cooking to buying the ingredients. I think he’s amazing for that. We’ve been open all year this past year, and we’ve been lucky to gain more and more regulars. It’s something to be grateful for. As my belly grew bigger, customers would be like “Wow, it’s grown so much!”. It’s been really fun getting to see and chat with them. And it’s only thanks to our staff, that I’ve been able to keep working. The part-time staff have been super helpful, always trying to make things easier for me. They really care about the restaurant. That makes me want to keep working alongside them. So I’ll keep doing what I can, for as long as I can.
