I decided to take a little break from the stifling heat and my busy work life and go on a solo trip. Hey everyone, it’s Seaman. I’m going on a trip starting today for a short time. Just a small, three-day summer vacation. Since it’s a short break, I had a really hard time deciding where to go, but Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku would have been too tight on the schedule, so I decided to travel to my hometown, Akita Prefecture, this time. (My parents are from Akita). However, the weather in Akita Prefecture is a bit bad, so it’s possible the plane might not be able to land. This trip is off to a rocky start. At Haneda Airport, we’re taking a bus to the boarding gate because of construction. It’s been a while since I’ve used stairs to board a plane, and it’s kind of exciting. “We may have to turn back to Haneda Airport. We appreciate your understanding.” It doesn’t look like anyone will be sitting next to me, so comfort is guaranteed. And so, my Akita Prefecture journey is about to begin. Maisen’s pork fillet cutlet sandwich, ¥950. The current weather around Akita Airport is very heavy rain, and we’ve received a report that the temperature is 23°C. There is an active linear rainband over the area. We have decided to hold in the air until the cloud system passes the airport. It is also possible that we may have to re-attempt the landing. We ask for your understanding and cooperation in advance. The plane keeps circling and isn’t landing anytime soon. It’s very bumpy, and I feel like I’m going to get sick. 20 minutes later… This aircraft has now extended its landing gear and is in its final approach. We will be landing shortly. Please fasten your seatbelt low around your waist, making sure there is no slack or twists. It looks like we’ll arrive safely at Akita Airport. I feel sick. We landed safely! Thank you, Captain!! Now, from Akita Airport, I’m heading to the city center by shared taxi. Thank you. Closing the door. The shared taxi is almost always a private ride for me. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the city. I’ll wait a bit until the motorcycle shop opens. I had a place planned for today, but the place I was planning on going still has rain clouds over it. It looks like there aren’t any rain clouds over the Oga Peninsula, so I’m thinking of changing my plans and heading there. I’ve arrived at the rental motorcycle shop. And so, I’m starting a three-day journey with a Honda Rebel 250. This is my second time riding a Rebel 250, but I’ve forgotten everything, so I’m getting a thorough lesson. Alright, now I’m going to head to the Oga Peninsula. The Rebel 250 has the key on the side. Alright, my Akita trip starts now! I’m a little nervous on a bike I’m not used to. So, I’m heading for the Oga Peninsula, where there seem to be no rain clouds. I have almost no plan, but I’m sure it’ll work out, right…? I think it’s starting to rain a little. Here it comes… It doesn’t look like it’s going to be heavy rain, though. I’ve arrived at a place that looks like the **Otonrui Wind Farm**
(*A famous wind farm in Hokkaido). For some reason, all of them are slacking off. Oh? Isn’t that a Namahage up ahead? Let’s stop by! Wow, it’s a Namahage! Yeah! I’m in Akita! *”Namahage”* is a tradition centered around the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, where gods come at the turn of the year. They are said to be a welcome presence that admonishes human laziness, wards off evil, and brings a bountiful harvest and good catch. A motorcycle trip in Akita is a dream come true! I made it to the Oga Peninsula! I found a cafe, so I’ll take a short break. One Espresso Tonic, please! It’s coffee made with espresso and tonic water. This is absolutely delicious! A perfect cup of coffee while gazing at the Namahage. My fatigue is gone. Thanks for the meal. I’ll browse the souvenirs. A SNOOPY Namahage handkerchief! The Hello Kitty Akita dog socks are cute too. Oh, Shotturu Yakisoba, huh? I’ve been to Akita so many times, but I’ve never had it. Purchase. I’ve already bought a souvenir.
It’s only the first day. Meanwhile, Fukusuke is… The “Shotturu Yakisoba” has me intrigued, so I think I’ll have “Shotturu Yakisoba” for lunch today. Let’s go! Shotturu is a traditional seasoning from Akita Prefecture, a “fish sauce” made by salting fish like the sandfish and aging it for a long period. It has a unique flavor and deep umami. It’s used in the local dish “shotturu hotpot” and as a secret ingredient in other foods. So, since there’s a roadside station ahead, I think I’ll go there. It’s such a peaceful time riding while looking at the Oga Peninsula and the Sea of Japan. I arrived at the roadside station about 15 minutes from the Namahage statue. So, will I be able to eat the “Shotturu Yakisoba” I was looking forward to? There it is! It seems to be a B-class gourmet food of the Oga Peninsula 🙂 Um, one Shotturu Yakisoba, and one All-Free (non-alcoholic beer), please! So, I’m having a meal in a restaurant with classical music playing. It doesn’t feel like a roadside station. Yay, it looks so good. Time to eat! This is delicious! It’s like all the umami of seafood is condensed in this, it’s so tasty. I can really taste the deep umami of the shotturu! They were also selling shotturu-flavored ice cream. Oh, this is delicious! What is this ball of umami?! It seems there’s a brewery called **Moroi Jozo** nearby that makes shotturu, so I’ll go check it out. Excuse me… I lost the entrance! Where are you from? I came from Tokyo. Did you look it up online? Ah, I just ate the soft serve at the roadside station. “Morosoff”! Thank you. It was so good, so I came here! Apparently, the sandfish catch in Akita Prefecture has decreased drastically. The main cause is said to be the rise in sea temperatures since 2020, and this season’s catch was the lowest on record. At its peak, there were 20,607 tons of sandfish. This year, there were only 17 tons. The shotturu made with 100% sandfish at Moroi Jozo is now a very rare product. So, I bought a whole bunch of it 😀 My parents are from Akita, so I used to have shotturu hotpot sometimes, but I want to try making various things with it myself now. Shotturu (100% sandfish) ¥1,620 | Dashi-infused soy sauce ¥346 I bought some precious shotturu made with 100% Akita sandfish as a souvenir! Hearing the story from the maker makes you appreciate how rare this shotturu is! The sky has cleared up a lot, so I’m going to head to **Kanpuzan Mountain**. Kanpuzan is said to be such a beautiful place that it’s called one of the **Three Great Views of the World**, not just Japan. I’m so excited to see what kind of magnificent view awaits me. Slowly, I’m gaining elevation. Kanpuzan is a volcano with an elevation of about 355m. Volcanic activity began more than 30,000 years ago, and repeated activity caused lava to pile up and gradually grow into its current shape. It is said that a Japanese geographer visited Kanpuzan in 1913, was so moved that he praised it as one of the Three Great Views of the World, alongside the Grand Canyon in the United States and the fjords of Norway. Kanpuzan. Wow… Amazing! My heart is completely captured by this scenery, just like Aso. A little more to the summit. I think I can go a little higher. This view is so incredible, it’s hard to believe we had a downpour this morning. Yay, I have it all to myself! This is just too amazing! Whoa! Wait a minute, what is this place? Hachirogata. Hachirogata was once Japan’s second-largest lake after Lake Biwa (219 km²), but due to land reclamation, only about a ninth of it (27.7 km²) remains as an irrigation water reservoir. The sky is so blue, it’s hard to believe it was raining so hard the plane couldn’t land! The magnificent view from Kanpuzan, with a comfortable breeze, gave me the best feeling that nothing can compare to! Look! It’s such a beautiful view! I’m so glad I came! The best!! I could look at this for hours. What an amazing place… Well, I’ll be heading back soon. I’m so happy I came to Kanpuzan. It’s so amazing. The descent is scary. The descent is a little scary. It’s a miracle that I happened to come to the Oga Peninsula and it happened to be sunny. I’ll never forget this beautiful scenery for the rest of my life. Wow, that was amazing. It was definitely worth coming here. Ah, the scenic view is over. On the way back, all I could see was Akitakomach rice fields stretching for miles.
(*Akitakomachi is a brand of rice grown in Akita Prefecture). Everywhere I ride, there’s scenery I can’t see in Tokyo. That’s why I can’t stop traveling. So, this time I’m staying at a Dormy Inn in Akita City. I had no problem booking a flight, but I couldn’t find a hotel. It’s a miracle I was able to book this one. The only room available was a smoking room, but I had no choice. I’m so tired. Oh, it smells like cigarettes. Ugh, I’m so tired. Well, day one is over. This hotel’s hot spring is amazing. The hot spring felt so good on my tired body. Well, I have to get up early tomorrow, so I’m going to sleep now. Good night.
