Chiba Castle 2025

Today, I’m heading to Chiba Castle (Inohana Castle) in Chiba Prefecture. Chiba Castle is said to be the birthplace of Chiba. I’ll be heading to Chiba Station by JR. Today, I’ll be taking the monorail from Chiba Station. The Chiba Urban Monorail is a suspended monorail. It’s like a little stroll through the air. It has a unique floating sensation. I’ve arrived at Prefectural Office Station. I can see the replica castle tower of Chiba Castle. It’s believed that the Chiba clan’s mansion was located on the site of Chiba Castle in the Middle Ages. However, no traces have been found in excavations, and opinions are divided. The current Chiba Castle ruins still feature remains of earthworks and dry moats from the Sengoku period. The replica castle tower can be seen in the background. However, it seems that there was no castle tower during the Sengoku period; only simple buildings existed. It’s a magnificent replica castle tower. There is a statue of Chiba Tsunetane, who contributed to the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. There is a monument commemorating the 850th anniversary of the founding of Chiba. There is a relief of Chiba Tsunetane. The museum inside the replica castle tower was closed for renovations. The previous museum also housed exhibits related to the Chiba clan. We strolled around the area. Visible ahead are the remains of an earthen rampart from the Warring States period. There are other remaining ramparts, so we went to see them. We climbed up onto the ramparts. This is the remains of a moat. This location is thought to be the site of a lookout tower. There is a stone monument from Inohana Castle. This is the site of a well called Ochanomizu. Legend has it that Chiba Tsunetane presented tea to Minamoto no Yoritomo. After this, we headed to Chiba Shrine, which has ties to the Chiba clan. It’s about a 15-minute walk from Chiba Castle to Chiba Shrine. We arrived at Chiba Shrine. It’s said that Minamoto no Yoritomo also visited the shrine with the guidance of Chiba Tsunetane. The Fukutokuden Hall can be seen in the center. Each of the octagonal star shrines protects the directions, the five elements, and the twelve zodiac signs. The main deity of Chiba Shrine is Hokushin Myokenson Seio. Fourteen sub-shrines are enshrined around Myoken Pond. This is Chiba Tenjin Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. There is a stone monument bearing a haiku by Matsuo Basho. This is the site of Dainichi-ji Temple, near Chiba Shrine. There once stood a five-ringed stupa, said to be the tombstone of successive generations of the Chiba clan. There is also a bust of Chiba Tsunetane here. Thank you for watching.
