Are you ready for a winter trip to Hokkaido? If you’re not used to the climate,
it can be a bit stressful deciding what to wear. In fact, a little knowledge and the right clothing
can make a huge difference in how comfortable your trip is. In this video, as a Hokkaido local,
I’ll share tips to help you fully enjoy your winter trip! Watch this and you’ll be able to enjoy Hokkaido in winter 100%! Characteristics of Hokkaido in Winter The first thing to know is the nature of Hokkaido’s winter. In midwinter, it’s not uncommon for daytime temperatures to drop below freezing. But don’t worry. Indoors, it’s very warm—sometimes warm enough to wear light clothing. Cold outside, warm inside. This is an important point to consider when choosing what to wear in Hokkaido. The best clothing depends on the sightseeing spots and how you spend your time. By the way, I also made a video explaining the underground walkways,
which are very useful for winter sightseeing. Be sure to check that out too! I’ve included the link in the description. How to Choose Gloves An essential item for Hokkaido winter is gloves. Of course, they protect your hands from the cold, but the right choice can greatly affect your comfort during the trip. Large gloves are warm, but they make using your smartphone or taking photos very inconvenient. If your trip mainly involves walking around town or sightseeing, gloves that fit well and can easily slip into your pocket are recommended. For example, bulky gloves like these make it difficult to take out or put back your smartphone or tickets from your pocket. And something surprisingly unknown is “you can buy gloves cheaply locally in Hokkaido.” There’s no need to spend time preparing them overseas or in Honshu. You can easily and cheaply get winter gloves at
airport souvenir shops, convenience stores, or retail stores like Uniqlo. Even 100-yen shops sell them, and they work perfectly fine. If you feel “too cold!” while traveling, you can just buy a pair on the spot. Gloves are easy to get in Hokkaido, so don’t worry! However, those planning winter activities need to be careful. If you’re going skiing, snowboarding, or playing in the snow, make sure to have gloves with high water resistance. Ordinary gloves will let snow soak in,
and your hands will get cold quickly. In that case, you can easily get them at hardware stores or sports/camping stores. On the other hand, if you’re just walking around town or eating out,
you don’t need to worry too much about water resistance. In other words, it’s important to choose gloves according to your style of sightseeing. Consider not just warmth, but usability, availability,
and the type of activities you’ll do. Knowing this makes your winter Hokkaido trip much more comfortable. How to Choose Winter Shoes One of the most important items for a winter trip to Hokkaido is shoes. You might have your coat and gloves ready, but are your usual sneakers enough? Many people feel uncertain about this. In fact, choosing the wrong winter shoes can turn what should be a fun trip
into a stressful experience. The real danger on Hokkaido winter roads is ice, not snow. Sidewalks and crosswalks can freeze at night after melting in the daytime, becoming slippery like an ice rink. That’s why it’s very important to choose shoes with solid anti-slip soles. Familiar winter shoes are best, but if you haven’t prepared them, you can easily get a pair at local shoe stores, sports shops,
or shopping malls. For sightseeing, lightweight mid-length boots are recommended over leather shoes. They are less likely to cause blisters and have good water resistance. Also, it’s good to know about emergency “anti-slip attachments for shoe soles.” Your shoe choice depends on your sightseeing style. Walking around town or eating out → Regular waterproof sneakers or boots Snow play or skiing → Insulated boots covering the ankles In other words, focusing on slip resistance and water resistance ensures no mistakes. With these points in mind, you can walk safely on ice and fully enjoy your winter Hokkaido trip! How to Choose an Outer Layer An essential item for winter trips to Hokkaido is your outerwear. It keeps you warm, of course, but ease of wearing and functionality are also important points. Hokkaido winter temperatures can drop below freezing even during the day. But indoors, it’s very warm—sometimes comfortable even with light clothing. So, your outerwear should consider both “protection from outdoor cold”
and “comfort indoors.” Recommended items are down jackets or nylon winter coats. They are lightweight, warm, and repel water even when it snows. Hooded types are especially useful as they can cover your ears
and protect against wind or snow. Hokkaido snow is powdery, so umbrellas are mostly unnecessary. Snow on clothing can be easily brushed off. However, some materials make it harder to remove snow. Soft materials like wool or fleece tend to trap snow and it can be difficult to brush off. In contrast, waterproof or water-repellent materials like nylon or down let snow slide off easily, making them easy to handle. Also, choosing outerwear that’s easy to put on and take off
makes indoor comfort better. Since indoor heating is strong, think about what to wear underneath
when you take off your outer layer. Thin fleece or Heattech layers work well for adjusting to temperature differences. Your choice also depends on your sightseeing style. Walking around town or eating out → Lightweight, warm down jackets or winter coats Snow play or skiing → Waterproof, windproof outerwear with hood Outdoor events or snow festivals → Windproof long coats or thick down jackets One last tip: Check if snow can be easily brushed off your clothes;
this makes sightseeing much more comfortable. Color and design are, of course, up to you. Choosing bright colors that stand out in snowy landscapes is great for photos. At large events, it’s easier to spot friends or partners if you remember the color or design of their clothes. Also, at crowded events like snow festivals, mobile signal may be weak due to network congestion, so keep that in mind. Now you can enjoy the cold of Hokkaido in winter with peace of mind. How was that? Did you get the key points on what to wear to enjoy Hokkaido in winter? Gloves, shoes, outerwear—
small adjustments can greatly improve your comfort. Snow and ice aren’t scary, and you can enjoy a warm and memorable winter trip. If this video was helpful, please subscribe and like! In the comments, let us know which outfits caught your eye
