Currently, our regular Saturday uploads feature the Hokkaido series, but today we are bringing you a special edition from Toyama. The other day, I introduced Kaiōmaru filmed with the DJI MINI 5 PRO, but today’s video features the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. In particular, I flew over Mount Tateyama, which is easily accessible from Toyama. As I am currently staying in Toyama, I was wondering where to film when OSANZ55 kindly recommended this location. I had never ventured into Mount Tateyama before, so I was curious to see what sort of scenery it would reveal. We have arrived at the car park. From here it is about a 30-minute walk to the viewing platform. As it had been raining heavily until last night, I expect the waterfalls to have a large volume of water. Quite a few visitors are here as well. I have received permission for drone flights and filming from the relevant authorities, including the Forestry Agency, the Ministry of the Environment, and Tateyama’s tourism office. As we approach the waterfall, a mist like fine rain falls upon us. I am rather anxious whether the drone will withstand it. If it seems dangerous, I may limit filming to distant views and avoid getting too close. A young lady is taking “Instagram-worthy” photos nearby, and I too begin my filming without delay. Shōmyō Falls This waterfall in Tateyama Town originates from the Tateyama mountain range and has a drop of 350 metres. It proudly holds the title of the tallest waterfall in Japan. Flowing from the Midagahara Plateau, it becomes the Shōmyō River and later joins the Jōganji River. It is composed of four tiers, with the fourth dropping 126 metres. The third tier drops 96 metres. The second tier drops 58 metres. The first and highest tier drops 70 metres. The plunge pool has a diameter of 60 metres and a depth of around 6 metres. It is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument by the Japanese government, and is counted among Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls and the Three Great Waterfalls of Japan. It is said that the name derives from Hōnen perceiving the sound of the falls as chanting “Namu Amida Butsu.” In spring, when snowmelt swells the flow, Hannoki Falls appears to the right of Shōmyō Falls, visible as a thin cascade. As Toyama had heavy rain last night, today Hannoki Falls is flowing clearly. Further to the right, Sōmen Falls also appeared, allowing us to witness the rare sight of the “Three Phantom Waterfalls” together. In fact, Hannoki Falls has a drop of about 500 metres, making it taller than Shōmyō Falls at 350 metres. However, as it does not flow year-round, it is not recognised as Japan’s tallest waterfall. Therefore, the waterfall officially recognised with the greatest drop in Japan is Shōmyō Falls. Its sheer scale and length left me uncertain of the best angles to capture. Moreover, the spray reaches over a hundred metres, so most of my shots were from telephoto and felt like failures. I should have studied more videos from YouTubers who regularly film waterfalls in advance. Let me continue with a little more footage of Japan’s tallest waterfall. If you have time, please stay for another 90 seconds. On the way back, I stopped by the Tateyama Caldera Sabo Museum and viewed its free exhibitions. It is very educational and highly recommended.
