諏訪大社は諏訪湖の南に位置する上社（前宮と本宮）と北側の下社（春宮と秋宮）の２社４宮で構成される、全国に一万社余ある諏訪神社の総本社です。ご祭神は、出雲大社に祀られている大国主命（おおくにぬしのみこと）の第二子神、建御名方神（たけみなかたのかみ）とその妃神である八坂刀売神（やさかとめのかみ）で、下社ではさらに建御名方神の御兄神である八重事代主（やえことしろぬし）もお祀りしています。

建御名方神は「諏訪明神」「お諏訪さま」「諏訪大明神」として親しまれ、古くは風・水を司る五穀豊穣を祈る神として、中世には武勇の神、軍神として坂上田村麻呂や源頼朝、武田信玄、徳川家康などの武将から崇拝されてきました。現在は生命の根源・生活の源を守る神として崇敬されており、その御神徳には限りがないといわれています。

Suwa-taisha is the headquarters of more than 10,000 Suwa shrines throughout Japan, consisting of two shrines and four temples: the upper shrine (Mae-miya and Hon-miya) located south of Lake Suwa, and the lower shrine (Harumiya and Akimiya) in the north. The Suwa Shrine is dedicated to Takeminakata no Kami, the second child of Okuninushi no Mikoto, the deity enshrined at Izumo-taisha Shrine, and his consort Yasakatome no Kami, the deity enshrined at the lower shrine.

The deity is also worshipped as a god of military prowess by such warlords as Tamuramaro Sakanoue, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Shingen Takeda, and Ieyasu Tokugawa in the Middle Ages. Today, it is revered as a deity that protects the root of life and the source of livelihood, and its divine virtues are said to be without limit.
