Sakunami Onsen is relatively close to downtown Sendai, about 40 minutes by car, and is a hot spring town that was once called the inner sanctum of Sendai . It is a historic hot spring that opened in 1796 (Kansei 8) during the Edo period. Iwamatsu Ryokan, a long-established hotel with a history dating back to the opening of Sakunami Onsen, was rebranded by the Oedo Onsen Monogatari Group and grand opened in April 2025 with the name of Premium. In this video, we will give a full review of the premium Sendai Sakunami, including an overview of the building, rooms, baths, and luxurious buffet meals. This video is full of highlights, so please watch until the end. History and OverviewOedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Sendai Sakunami is located in the heart of Sakunami Onsen, which has long been known as the inner sanctum of Sendai , along the upper reaches of the Hirose River that runs through the center of Sendai City . Its predecessor was Iwamatsu Ryokan, a long-established inn with over 200 years of history. In April 2025, Oedo Onsen Monogatari Premium Sendai Sakunami was born as a hotel under the “Premium” brand of Oedo Onsen Monogatari Hotels & Resorts, which operates over 30 hotels and inns nationwide. The concept of “Premium” is a Japanese-modern hot spring inn where you can relax in a quiet space. All guests can enjoy the hospitality of the Premium Lounge and a premium buffet, while maintaining the cost-performance of Oedo Onsen Monogatari. Premium Sendai Sakunami is currently a large hot spring hotel with 101 rooms, six floors above ground and one floor below ground. Access is good, about 25 minutes by car from Sendai Miyagi IC on the Tohoku Expressway, and about 5 minutes by shuttle bus from JR Sakunami Station . Front lobby Front lattice ceiling is from the Iwamatsu Ryokan era Shop ~ Premium Lounge Here are the facilities inside the building. 1F Kids Park It’s spacious, so your children can play freely♪ There are full-scale large play equipment, so you can play without worrying about the weather♪ 1F Amenity Corner The women’s yukatas are especially colorful👍 Toothbrushes are available for adults and children. 1F Shop The shop is large, and has a wide selection of items, mainly souvenirs. Sendai’s famous sweets Beef tongue curry and stew^^ Alcohol corner Children’s toys and boutiques, etc. 1F Premium Lounge The lounge has a high ceiling and is very spacious, and during the day you can feel the change of the seasons through the large windows, and at night the lights are slightly dimmed, creating a nice atmosphere. The seats are also spacious and relaxed👍 What’s great is that you can drink as much alcohol as you want! It’s a convenient lounge that you can use almost throughout your stay, from 10pm until 10am and 7am until 10am. Draft beer, chuhai, wine, etc. On the first basement floor, there is a large public bath “Fuji no Yu” and facilities to enjoy after a bath. After-bath lounge Next to the large public bath, from 5:30 am to 12:00 am, it is an even more convenient lounge. Drinks and ice cream are available♪ There is a wide selection of the latest manga! Zero gravity massage is charged. B1F Table tennis corner is free (reservation required). Next to the table tennis corner was a game corner. B1F Karaoke room is also free. B1F Pool This 20m pool is a hot spring^^ Check-in We were told about meal times, the lounge and the bath. Dinner was in two sessions, 17:30 and 19:00, and breakfast was in two sessions, 7:00 or 8:00. Check-out is at 11:00. There is a payment machine in front of the front desk. Check-out is done here. If you join the Iifuro membership, you can receive benefits such as a 10% discount on your stay. It is easy to register, so why not register when you make a reservation or check in. I received a yukata and a toothbrush and headed to my room ^^ Room Review 6F The decorations and wall coverings of the floor corridor are also new. Room 615, Superior Japanese-Western Room The washbasin, toilet, and bathroom are on the right, and the room is on the left . The toilet is a toilet with a regular washlet, and there was a pot and tea bags. There is nothing in the refrigerator. The wood grain gives it a luxurious feel! The sink is also very new. The bath is a unit bath. Shampoos are Orange Rose Superior Japanese-Western Room (6th floor) The room is quite spacious, with a 10-tatami Japanese-style room in the front and a Western-style room in the back! The windows are large, and the mountain view is nice. There are two Simmons single-size beds. In the closet there was a haori, a bath towel, and a plain face towel. You can borrow a yukata from the front desk. There is a small TV and a safety deposit box below . WiFi is available in the room. The internet speed here is a little slow. There is no problem with mobile phone signals. Introducing the baths: The large public baths are on the first basement floor, with the men’s and women’s baths, Fujino-yu . Down the stairs from the second basement floor, there is the historic rock bath and indoor bath (Kouka-no-yu). Please note that the baths on the second basement floor are switched between men and women , and women can only use them on the check-in day and men on the check-out day. Sodium calcium chloride sulfate spring with a pH of 8.2-8.3 . The spring temperature is around 57 degrees. Surprisingly, all three of the natural rock baths are artesian springs from separate sources. Fujino-yu Women’s Bath Fujino-yu Women’s Bath The main bath is the changing area, so there are plenty of lockers. There are two washbasins… there are POLA cosmetics and samples from the shop^^ Shower caps, combs, razors, etc. The toilet There is a raised tatami mat and a baby bed, so you can take care of your children! It is cold water and there are baby goods etc.Fuji no Yu Women’s BathIt is very spacious with a high ceiling and a sense of opennessIt seems to have been completely renovated (^^♪ The right side is the indoor bath and the left is the open-air bath. (Previously the entire bath was indoors) The indoor bath is a very new stone tub and is spacious enoughThe hot spring water flows directly from this outlet.There are handrails and steps, and barrier-free access has been taken into consideration.The water is colorless, transparent and odorless, and is very easy to enterFuji no Yu Women’s Open -air BathIt is a larger tub than the indoor bathIt is made of stone and has a very luxurious feel♪ There is a roof, but the upper part is open.There was also a saunaIt was a new dry sauna that was spacious enough.In front of the sauna there was a cold bath.There were also sauna goodsThere were also a sufficient number of washing areas.Shampoos were orange roseFuji no Yu Men ‘s BathFuji no Yu Men’s BathChanging SpaceThis is also spacious enoughLike the women’s bath, there was a raised tatami mat floor and a baby bedThe washbasin is divided into two and there are a sufficient number of washbasins. Now, let’s go to the open-air bathFuji no Yu Men’s Open-air BathA very large open-air bath! There is a roof, but there are no windows at the back, so it is open. You can see a nice view of the fresh greenery👍The spout is an interesting shape^^ The hot spring water is gushing out♪ It’s hard to see, but there is glass to separate it.The sauna is very new, a full-fledged dry sauna. There are many cold baths and sauna goods washing areas in front of the sauna , and the partitions ensure privacy👍Shampoo is the same as in the women’s bath.Natural rock bath, Kouka no YuFirst, take the elevator down to the second basement floor. There are many “Senjafuda” (paper charms used by a thousand shrines) attached to the bath. I was impressed that the scenery of Iwamatsu Ryokan was still there . There are 88 steps to the rock bath. The stairs and surroundings are made of wood, and the atmosphere is excellent, but there is no elevator, so please be careful if you have difficulty walking. There was a space like a rest area. You can look down on the Hirose River from above. Along the way, there is Koka no Yu. Koka no Yu is switched between men and women at certain times (same as the rock bath). Koka no Yu Undressing Space It is a small undressing space . There is a washbasin. There are also cosmetics and a hair dryer. Isn’t Koka no Yu wonderful? I’m really happy that this bath was still there. The overall wooden atmosphere, the view from the window, the view outside reflected on the surface of the bath, everything is impressive. The entire window juts out, and the Hirose River is right in front of you. It is a fairly large stone bath. 100% natural spring water . Handrails and steps are also provided. There are five washing areas. There is a partition. The shampoo is the same as the other baths. The venue is a restaurant on the first basement floorOuThe newly built venue is very spacious, with greenery visible outside the window and ample seating space. We had unreserved seating and would like to introduce to you all the wonderful buffet that is a specialty of Oedo Onsen. The first thing that catches your eye is the sushi corner Sakura Inari Sushi Pink Inari Sushi ♪ Seared Shimesaba Steamed Shrimp Standard Tuna Trout Salmon It’s shiny ♪ Another standard is squid, followed by steamed hot spring seiro, which you can enjoy hot on the stove at the table (^^ ♪ This seiro has hot spring water in it ^^ From vegetables (cabbage, sweet potato, onion) to shrimp , scallops, corn, pork and sausage There’s a lot of it 👍 Hot spring seiro condiments Sashimi is tuna and salmon in a boat ♪ At the sweet shrimp live corner, you can enjoy hot sashimi made right in front of you ♪ Sendai specialty beef tongue salted and miso nanban steak as a side dish is also live 😋 They cut it so it’s easy to eat 👍 As side dishes, mashed potatoes and cauliflower tempura are also served right in front of you ♪ Lotus root and sweet potato tempura Bamboo shoot shrimp tempura Sendai’s unique fried oysters are creamy tartar sauce, which is also great ♪ The local Sendai miso ramen soup is rich! The freshly baked croissants were crispy, the French toast cooked right in front of you was full of flavour and of course, we finished off with dessert😍 There were over 80 types of food in the morning, and as you would expect from Oedo Onsen, it was a very satisfying buffet~ We checked out at the checkout machine. This time we chose the basic plan, and the cost of a Superior Japanese-Western Room was 16,740 yen (per person per night) for one adult.
