Tokyo in Transition | Urban Walk from Autumn to Christmas Lights

Hi, this is Naoto. It’s November 25th, 2025. Since the weather is nice today, I’m going to walk from Jingu Gaien to Roppongi. Jingu Gaien is a vast area filled with sports and cultural facilities, and it’s a place where we can relax and unwind. First, we’re heading to the National Stadium. There it is—I can see it now. That’s the Docomo Tower, in the direction of Shinjuku. The Summer Olympics were held here in 2021. This is the Olympic cauldron from that time. The Games were held one year later than planned because of the COVID pandemic. The names of the medalists are displayed on the walls. It has a warm design that blends wood and steel. Some areas are open to the public. We’ve arrived on the fifth floor. The wood used for this eave was sourced from all 47 prefectures in Japan. You can walk all the way around the stadium. From here, you can see the ginkgo trees beyond the baseball field. That is the place we’ll visit later. Meiji Park is located next to the stadium. You’ll find cafés and restaurants here, making it a nice place to take a short break. The café has a spacious interior with high ceilings. We picked up a country bread with a pleasant, tangy flavor. Japan Olympic Museum. There’s a sparrow’s nest in a place like this. Replicas of the Olympic cauldrons used in Japan. Tokyo. Sapporo. Nagano Meiji Jingu Outer Garden
(Meiji Jingu Gaien) The ginkgo avenue we saw earlier from the stadium. he leaves are at their peak right now. Rickshaws — a classic sight in tourist spots. Everyone’s enjoying the autumn colors in their own way. Kids and dogs alike are enjoying it. Blue skies and golden ginkgo leaves. A carpet of yellow. Ginkgo leaves falling in a sudden rush. A beautiful sight that comes only once a year. Roasted sweet potatoes are a classic winter treat. This building has two restaurants. We’re heading into the popular restaurant, “KIHACHI.” Ginkgo leaves piling up in no time. Pumpkin soup. Smooth, comforting flavors. The main dishes have arrived. Chicken steak with spicy oriental sauce 4,200 yen($27) Creamy truffle-scented mushroom and sea urchin spaghetti 2,900 yen($19) The chicken is tender with a crisp, golden exterior. The spaghetti comes with a rich sauce topped with a soft-boiled egg. It’s a bit pricey during the busy season, but it comes with coffee and made for a pleasant time. Time to continue our walk. This is Aoyama Cemetery, a large cemetery located in one of Tokyo’s prime areas. Around the center of the cemetery rests Eisaburo Ueno. His beloved dog might be more famous.
Hachiko’s memorial is right nearby. After passing through the cemetery, we arrive around Nogizaka. There’s a striking museum here in Nogizaka. A mysterious design you could keep looking at. Beneath this large disc is an umbrella stand. The disc balances design and practicality. Inside, a vast atrium opens up, with two massive cones rising through the space. There’s also a café . At the top of the massive cones are restaurants. Like a curtain of glass. At the top of the first cone is a tea salon. Every angle feels picture-perfect. At the top of the second cone is a popular French restaurant. Downstairs, you’ll find a shop and a café. The prices are surprisingly reasonable. This is the back of the annex, with a modern look. From the front, it has a classic design.
Part of the building has been preserved from its original use as military barracks. So this site once housed military facilities… Heading toward Tokyo Midtown. A Christmas tree stands at the entrance. Every ornament is Santa Claus. These Santas are said to be wandering around the building, so I’ll try to find them later. Further inside, there’s a large Christmas display. Right beneath it, you’ll find a Christmas market. The illuminations start at 5:00 p.m., so we explore inside until then. We’ll look for the Santas that have wandered off from the tree on the first floor. Found! There has to be one here. And there he was. Hot pot shows up often at our place in winter. Got it! Sunset is approaching. Warm and cool lights mixed together. Bubbles and drifting smoke. A truly magical scene. This illumination runs until December 25. Next, we’re heading to Keyakizaka in Roppongi. These illuminations can also be enjoyed until December 25. Nearby, Mohri Garden is also beautiful. Tokyo Tower appears right in the middle of the zelkova-lined street.
