【陰翳礼賛 – 奥能登 伝説の宿】湯宿 さか本 / 石川県 珠洲市 能登半島

石川県珠洲市 湯宿さか本に投宿してきました。

洗練された美しさと過度なおもてなしを行わない接客スタイル、そして食へのこだわりが常連を増やし『奥能登 伝説の宿』と呼ばれる宿を以前雑誌で知りました。以来最も訪れてたい宿の一つとなりましたが、2024年の能登地震の影響もあり昨年夏、ようやくその願いが叶ったものです。

チャンネル名『湯宿手帖』はこちらの宿の名前に影響を受けています。それほど訪問を心待ちにしていた宿でもあります。

こちらは一般的な旅館ではありません。WEBにはこう記されれています。

もしかしたら、さか本は大いに好き嫌いを問う宿です。
なにしろ、部屋にテレビも電話もトイレもない。
冷房設備もないから、夏は団扇と木立をぬける風がたより。

この言葉が全てを物語っていると思います。大手の旅行サイトには載っておらず、ゲストはWEBや雑誌を見てこちらを知り訪れるため、この雰囲気を求める方が多く訪れるのでしょう。

宿のコンセプトはゲストにとっての別宅。宿に入ると過度なサービスはなく、自然な雰囲気で部屋に通されることに驚きます。その思想は現在宿を切り盛りする娘の菜の花さんに受け継がれています。ほったらかしでも見えないおもてなしの心を感じる宿。そんな滞在を求める方には最高のお宿になることでしょう。

美しい建屋は輪島の建築家 高木信治氏とご主人が作り上げた美しい空間。その拘りは細部にわたり、黒漆で仕上げられた床や自然と一体化した館内は時間のうつろいとともに陰翳を美しく映し出します。その奥ゆかしい表情はまさに「陰翳礼讃」の宿。谷崎潤一郎が書いた美しさを現代に体現したお宿と言えるでしょう。その美しさは館内のみならず湯屋や離れ、全てに体現されているように感じました。

素朴でありながら上品な器にて一品ずつ供される食事は山々と海に囲まれた能登のスペシャリティ。旅館料理とは一線を画す一品料理の数々。一期一会のゲストがダイニングを囲み、美味しい食事から自然と会話が広がります。夕食後もその団欒は続き、人々の温かさと旅の楽しさを思い出させてくれる日本でも貴重なお宿だと思います。

今回、お邪魔するにあたり、菜の花さんに大変お世話になりました。思い出に残る素晴らしい滞在。能登に別宅を持つ喜びを噛みしめ、次回お邪魔する日が今から待ち遠しいです。

I recently stayed at Yuyado Sakamoto in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture Japan.

I first learned about this inn, known as the “Legendary Inn of Oku-Noto,” in a magazine. Its refined beauty, understated service style, and dedication to food have earned it a loyal following. Since then, it has been one of the inns I most wanted to visit, and last summer, despite the impact of the 2024 Noto earthquake, I finally fulfilled that wish.

My channel name, “Yuyado Techo,” is influenced by the name of this inn. That’s how much I was looking forward to visiting it.

This is not a typical ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Their website states:

Perhaps Sakamoto is an inn that will greatly divide opinions.
After all, there is no television, telephone, or toilet in the rooms.
There is no air conditioning, so in the summer, you rely on fans and the breeze through the trees.
In the winter, there is only the irori (hearth) and wood-burning stove.

Yes, it’s an inn that is lacking in some ways, and doesn’t offer everything.

I think these words say it all. It’s not listed on major travel websites, and guests learn about it and visit through websites and magazines, so many of those who visit are likely seeking this kind of atmosphere.

The inn’s concept is that of a second home for its guests. Upon entering, you’re surprised by the lack of excessive service and the natural atmosphere as you’re shown to your room. This philosophy has been inherited by the owner’s daughter, Nanohana, who now manages the inn. It’s an inn where you feel a subtle, unseen hospitality even though you’re left to your own devices. It would be the perfect inn for those seeking such a stay.

The beautiful building is a space created by the architect Shinji Takagi of Wajima and the owner. Their attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from the black lacquer-finished floors to the way the building integrates with nature, beautifully reflecting the changing light and shadows throughout the day. Its understated elegance is truly a “praise of shadows,” embodying the beauty described by Junichiro Tanizaki in his essay. I felt this beauty was embodied not only in the main building but also in the bathhouse and annexes. The meals, served one dish at a time in simple yet elegant tableware, showcase the specialties of Noto, surrounded by mountains and the sea. The dishes are a cut above typical ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) cuisine. Guests, meeting for the first time, gather around the dining table, and conversation naturally flows from the delicious food. This camaraderie continues even after dinner, making this a truly precious inn in Japan that reminds you of the warmth of people and the joy of travel.

We were greatly indebted to Nanohana-san during our stay. It was a wonderful and memorable experience. We savored the joy of having a second home in Noto, and we are already looking forward to our next visit.
