茨城県潮来市で毎年5月下旬から6月下旬にかけて開催される「水郷潮来あやめ祭り」は、初夏の水郷を代表する風物詩です。会場となる 水郷潮来あやめ園 には約500種100万株もの花菖蒲が咲き誇り、水辺を鮮やかな紫や白、黄色の花々が彩ります。祭り期間中の最大の見どころは、花嫁が舟に乗って嫁ぎ先へ向かう伝統行事「嫁入り舟」。白無垢姿の花嫁を乗せた舟がゆっくりと水路を進む光景は、水郷情緒あふれる潮来ならではの風景として人気を集めています。また、ろ舟遊覧や夜間ライトアップも行われ、昼とは異なる幻想的な景色を楽しめます。

The Itako Iris Festival, held annually from late May to late June in Itako City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of the most beloved early-summer events in Japan’s historic waterside region. At the festival venue, Suigo Itako Iris Garden, approximately one million iris flowers representing around 500 varieties bloom in spectacular fashion, painting the waterways with vibrant shades of purple, white, and yellow.
The festival’s most famous attraction is the traditional “Yomeiri-bune” (Bridal Boat Procession). In this cherished custom, a bride dressed in a beautiful white wedding kimono travels by boat to her wedding destination.
