TOKYO: Kanto Okinawa Eisa Festival – Eisa Street Procession at Showa Shindo Shopping Street | Japan
The Kanto Okinawa Eisa Festival is a festival featuring Eisa, a traditional Okinawan performing art. Organized by Nakano Kitaguchi Showa Shindo Shopping Street, with planning and operation by the Kanto Okinawa Eisa Festival Executive Committee, the first edition of the festival is held in Nakano Ward, Tokyo, over two days, July 18 and 19. The event features stage performances by Eisa groups and street processions.
Eisa is a traditional Okinawan performing art that has been performed during the Obon season to honor and comfort ancestral spirits. Across Okinawa, regional styles of dance and taiko drumming have been passed down, with powerful performances featuring dancers moving in formation while playing drums.
At Showa Shindo Shopping Street, Eisa groups performed a street procession, with drum performances and chants accompanying the dancers.
