It is the people of “Chiba Kagura drum” that is playing Japanese drums at the Bon Odori convention.

Tanko Bushi (炭坑節) is one of Japan’s most famous traditional folk songs, widely performed at Bon Odori (summer lantern festivals) nationwide.
    Originally
sung by coal miners in Fukuoka Prefecture to ease their hard labor, it
is known for its catchy rhythm and easy-to-learn dance moves.

    🎵 Song Overview
    Origin: Fukuoka Prefecture (Chikuho Coalfield)
Famous Lyric: “Tsuki ga deta deta, tsuki ga deta (The moon has come out, the moon has come out)”
    Cultural Impact:
The song captures the spirit of postwar Japan’s industrial growth,
transitioning from a local work song into a national festive dance.

🕺 The 5 Dance Movements (Miners’ Labor)
The choreography beautifully mimics the daily tasks of coal miners. Dancers
move in a circle clockwise, repeating these five steps:
Digging (Hotte): Mimic digging coal with a shovel—twice on the right, twice on the left.
Carrying (Katsuyide): Mimic throwing a heavy sack of coal over your shoulder—once on the right, once on the left.
Wiping/Looking (Nagamete): Put a hand over your brow to look at the moon (or wipe sweat away)—once on the right, once on the left.
Pushing (Oshida_shite): Push a heavy coal cart forward with both hands twice.
Clapping (Hiraite): Open your arms and finish with a rhythmic three-beat clap (cho-chon-ga-chon) to reset.
