🌏Nishiyama Plateau in Muroto, Kochi, Japan is a rare marine terrace landscape within the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark, one of the most active tectonic regions in Japan shaped by the Nankai Trough. 🌎

Shaped by continuous tectonic uplift along the Nankai Trough, this land preserves the geological memory of a rising seafloor still active today.
Unlike typical farmland, this terrain was created by long-term crustal movement and coastal erosion, making it a living example of an active marine terrace system in Japan.
For centuries, people struggled to cultivate this harsh environment due to rocky soils, poor water retention, strong coastal winds, and frequent typhoons.
Early settlement attempts in the Edo period eventually failed under these extreme conditions.
However, over nearly 200 years, continuous human effort transformed the land through irrigation ponds and windbreak forests, creating a stable agricultural base.
Today, the plateau produces Nishiyama Kintoki sweet potatoes, watermelons, and citrus fruits, supporting the local economy and culture of Muroto.
This film captures the deep connection between tectonic Earth processes and human resilience, presented as a cinematic visual journey.
