Niigata is a rice-producing region.
I imagined a landscape of Japanese houses standing all the way, but this is indeed one of the five cities that opened their ports to the world in 1859-1869!
The city has been influenced by Western culture and has a wonderful blend of Japanese and Western style.
It takes only about 2 hours from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, so you can easily visit there on weekends!
