国道143号は長野県内のみ完結の比較的短い国道ですが、道中はなかなか険しいですよね。一度だけ上田側より全線走破したことがあります。青木峠も道はかなり狭いですが、松本市街地の方も部分的にセンターラインが途切れて歩道すらない建物スレスレを通り抜ける狭隘区間があって、走りにくいうえにそれなりに交通量もあるので、こちらの方もかなり危険な道路ですよね。
市街地を抜けると程なくして(13:52辺りから)暫く快走路が続き、良い区間になりますね。さらに青木峠の手前では新しく会吉バイパスが開通したので、青木峠の松本側の狭隘区間が少しだけ短縮されましたね。青木峠は新しいバイパスの計画がありますが、会吉バイパスは青木峠のバイパスの延長ということなのでしょうね。

会吉バイパス開通により松本側は走りやすくなりましたが、峠の前後はまるで半世紀前にワープしたような狭隘な屈曲路ですね。こんな酷道でも以前は上田や東信方面から松本へ行くメイン道路で、松本市で開催の高校野球の県大会にはバスを連ねて応援に行ったもんです。今はR245三才山トンネルの開通そして無料化により旧道又は脇道となり見る影も無い国道ですが、解説にある通りトンネル化の計画があり、完成すると上田の一部と松本を結ぶ最短ルートとなりますね。
