Ishima Island lies in the Pacific Ocean, belonging to Anan City in Tokushima Prefecture.
It is the easternmost island of Shikoku — about 9.5 km in circumference and 1.45 km2 in area — home to around 100 residents, surrounded by quiet days and a bountiful sea.
A small ferry named Mishima connects the island with the mainland port of Kotajima, a 30 minute journey, operating 3 times a day.
The entire island is part of the Muroto–Anan Kaigan Quasi-National Park, where its rich natural environment is carefully protected.

The history of the island began in 1654, when Sounemon Kanno, under the order of the local lord Jin’gobei Mori, first settled here.
Twice — in 1886 and again in 1952 — the island suffered devastating fires that destroyed most of its village.
Yet each time, the islanders united in spirit and rebuilt their lives from the ashes.
Fishing sustains the community.
Abalone, turban shells, sea urchins, spiny lobsters, flounder, prawns, and conger eels are among the island’s prized catches from the surrounding waters.

Ishima consists of 3 islands — the main island, Maejima, and Tanagojima — the latter 2 remaining uninhabited.
Geologically, Ishima belongs to the Shimanto Belt, formed about 80 million years ago.
Layers of sandstone and mudstone reveal the island’s ancient origins.
Over countless ages, the waves of the Pacific and the uplift of the earth have carved the coastline into dramatic cliffs known as marine erosion terraces.

Here, the sound of fishing boats, the scent of salt, and the whisper of the sea wind mingle with the memory of time.
Ishima is a place where nature and history breathe together — a forgotten jewel of the Pacific.

Standing 144 m above sea level, the white Ishima Lighthouse was first lit in 1956.
With a tower height of 22 m, its beam reaches as far as 23 nautical miles, or about 43 km.
Along the mountain path leading to the lighthouse, the island’s own rare flower — the Ishima Sasayuri, a pale pink lily — blooms quietly in early summer, greeting visitors with its gentle grace.
Even on cloudy days, from this small island floating in the Kii Channel, one can see the distant ridges of the Kii Peninsula and the mountains of Wakayama across the sea.
