彼女がこれほど大人しい人だとは！「こんにちは、ハワイ！」とか言えばいいものを。話し言葉が聞き取れないほど小さかった。’オープングで「島唄」を歌ったのには驚いた。意味を伝えたらよかったのに。夏川さんは、私の沖縄出身の友達で沖縄や九州にしかない特殊な白血病で亡くなった友人にそっくりで、歌を聞くたびに涙そうそう。私はバリ島に住んでいるが、個々のミュージシャンで「涙早々」を歌える人は多い。バリのガムラン音楽と音階が同じなので、親しみを感じるのだと思う。歌詞のマタハリは太陽というインドネシア語だし、やっぱり古代の人たちが沖縄にたどり着いて音楽や言葉を持ち込んだのだと思う。
I studied Okinawa pretty extensively when I was a student. What they derived from China and Japan was pretty obvious, except for one thing: music. Okinawan music doesn't sound Chinese, and it doesn't sound Japanese. It was a puzzle to me until the one day in Su Jyou, somebody turned on a radio to a local station. The music was identical to Okinawan except for the language of the lyrics. And it stood to reason since Su Jyou was an old captiol where Okinawans were welcome to come and absorb Chinese culture. I asked somebody about the music, and they said it was unique to Su Jyou. Bingo.
