福井県を旅して訪れたのは、美しい禅寺・永平寺。実際に足を運んでみると、期待をはるかに超える素晴らしい場所でした。

境内を約3時間かけて歩き回りましたが、それでも見たい場所や撮影したい景色をすべて回ることはできませんでした。それほど見どころが多く、また必ず訪れたいと思えるお寺です。

これまで日本各地を旅してきましたが、永平寺は私が訪れた中で最も静かで美しいお寺でした。手入れの行き届いた庭園、空高く伸びる杉並木、そして歴史を感じさせる壮麗な伽藍。その境内を歩いているだけで、心が落ち着き、自然と癒やされるような特別な時間を過ごすことができました。

さらに印象的だったのは、シカゴ出身で、永平寺で修行をしている唯一の西洋人僧侶の方とお会いできたことです。思いがけない出会いでしたが、とても心に残る貴重な経験になりました。

日本を旅行する機会があるなら、永平寺はぜひ訪れていただきたい場所です。きっと忘れられない思い出になると思います。

永平寺を後にしたあとは、宿にチェックインして温泉でゆっくりと疲れを癒やし、その後は福井の旬の食材をふんだんに使った会席料理をいただきました。地元・福井の日本酒とともに味わう一品一品はどれも素晴らしく、日本でこれまで食べた中で間違いなく一番おいしい食事でした。地元の食材の魅力を存分に感じられる、最高の締めくくりとなりました。

Our trip to Fukui took us to the breathtaking Eiheiji Temple, and it completely exceeded my expectations.

We spent nearly three hours exploring the temple grounds, yet I still didn’t have enough time to see and film everything I wanted. It’s one of those places that deserves multiple visits, and I already know I’ll be coming back.

Of all the places I’ve visited throughout Japan, Eiheiji is the most peaceful and beautiful temple I’ve experienced. The immaculate gardens, towering cedar trees, and stunning temple buildings create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. Simply walking through the grounds left me feeling calm, refreshed, and completely immersed in the surroundings.

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting the only Western monk currently training at Eiheiji, originally from Chicago. It was an unexpected and memorable conversation that made the experience even more special.

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, I can’t recommend Eiheiji Temple highly enough. It’s a destination that truly shouldn’t be missed.

After leaving the temple, we checked into our hotel and relaxed in the onsen before enjoying an incredible kaiseki dinner featuring a wide variety of seasonal dishes paired with locally brewed Fukui sake. Every ingredient was sourced locally, showcasing the region’s incredible produce. Without question, it was the finest meal I’ve ever had in Japan—every single dish was exceptional.
